How far would you go to avenge the ones you love?
Joh Ballinger’s wife has been killed by a drunken driver, and now, barely six months later, his daughter has been murdered by a religious psychopath.
For Ballinger, a precision gunsmith who makes some of the most accurate weapons in the world, the due process of the law is not enough.
Police custody would not be adequate protection for his daughter’s killer, not if they took him up into the Welsh mountains to locate her grave…
Does one evil justify another?
Diminished Responsibility explores the process of grief and how that can lead to revenge.
“… excitingly recounted with enough attention to detail on ballistics, boats and geography to satisfy the most demanding reader.” – The Sunday Times
Geoffrey Tøye was for many years a freelance photojournalist, and well-known especially for his highly informed articles on sailing, archery and high-powered air-guns. His first novel, the thriller Diminished Responsibility was a great success, and also appeared in translation abroad, most notably in Germany where it became a best-seller.

Intriguing storyline, characters well developed and were integral to the plot (not just there to make up the numbers). Well researched technically and to me, believable. If you’re a ‘peeker’, try not to be when reading this book - knowing the ending will ruin the story for you (my opinion).

A good read but too deatiled in places
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 November 2019Verified Purchase
This was a well written story with plausible characters. In many ways it’s worth a five, but there is one significant failing. In places the author shows how much he knows of his subject to the point where I simply skimmed entire pages. This was particularly the case when he wrote about firearms and geographical locations. Sometimes, less is more and much of the detail added nothing to the story.

Dredged up from 1990 when this book was originally published.I found it to be interesting at times but not consistently so.
Often read like an instruction manual which was written
with a grinding precision. The latter part of the book quickly adopted themes that were oh so familiar and became predictable.

*spoiler alert*
Not sure where to start about how many things were 'wrong' with this book. How about completely unnecessary pages detailing sex between the cop and his wife (WHY is that in there? / no point)? Also blatant sexism (i.e. cops wife waiting on him hand and foot with his meals, and then apologizing for not having food 'ready' for him when she won't be home on time to make him his supper? like really?). Describing the cop's wife as 'still attractive with some gray hair' at age 36 like we should think that 36 is 'old'. Several chapters / partial chapters dedicated to the protagonist's expertise in making these amazing guns, and setting up the area where he would wait out his daughter's 'killer', etc (long and tedious descriptions). Him 'going crazy' was completely stupid and detracted from an already bad book which I made myself finish. The 'plot' line of the step daughter obsessing over a dad she thought was her real dad for most of her life (and him being attracted to her) made no sense and was disgusting (sorry but he would have thought of her as 'his' daughter). No explanation for why he married a women pregnant with someone else's child. Really stupid ending with the 'killer' actually being the protagonist's brother (give me a break). I'm deleting this from my Kindle - what utter garbage!

Definitely a book for guys more than gals

But giving this book less than 5 stars would be criminal. Not being into guns and/or hunting, I did tend to skim parts. A great book with painstaking attention to detail. I found it hard to put down.

An Incredible Read! Spellbinding!

This complex thriller of a mystery is amazingly detailed and extremely well thought out! I only put it down - very reluctantly - to eat and sleep.
