THE DAILY TELEGRAPH 'Accomplished and gloriously black comedy' ALLAN GUTHRIE 'As elegant and witty as it is disturbing.' 'Lovely, sparse, elegant writing, highly original plot and ever- building tension make this book irresistible. There's sex and drugs and rock-and-roll, a whiff of true evil and a scream-out loud finale. Wow!' AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S WEEKLY'Scary and stylish slice of urban noir' BOYD TONKIN, INDEPENDENT 'Colourful characters, dramatic plot twists and vibrant vernacular ... a great read' THE BOOKSELLER 'Brilliant, shocking and unputdownable' --Sydney Morning Herald

Helen Fitzgerald has grown in stature since this novel. There’s evidence here of her snappy style and good plotting. However, we need to question some things. Eg: would it actually be be possible to garrotte a cat with the chain of a locket? And so forth. Crime writers - indeed any writers - need to really do their research and know, absolutely, whereof they speak. Decent. Holds attention. But a bit hard to believe on several points.

A lone Australian girl escaping the possible verdict on a horrible disease descends on London. Her adventures intertwine with a serial killer and victim. Helen does a good job of keeping us in suspense and keeping track of the various stories. Its a good entertaining story even with its dark subjects. It captures the whirlwind life that a young woman coming into London quite well. The story is well constructed and not belaboured of descriptions just to extend the length of the book hurrah. I'll keep my eye out for more stories from Helen

Brilliant

Intriguing, different, edge of your seat book... I couldn't put it down. In places it is a harsh and brutal story, not for the faint hearted, but absolutely brilliant portrayal of a young Aussie girl running away from her problems at home and joins a group of back packers in a London hostel. Within a few weeks, they break into an empty house and make it into their squat, little knowing what lurks beneath them in the cellar...

Was a bit surprised by the raw images, expected a novel more like her previous work, i.e The cry.

Mixed feelings

This is quite a gripping thriller, but I couldn't really like the characters. Perhaps I'm too old but I did get exasperated with the dope smoking, drunkenness and fecklessness. There's prolonged cruelty too (the mystery being who is perpetrating it); I know cruelty happens in real life but I don't particularly want to read about it as entertainment. So I give it 3 stars, but don't let my opinion put you off - it's worth a read.

This Book was dark as a very dark thing!
I really enjoyed it, although I did wince a lot as I read it. I've read most of Helen Fitzgerald's books and enjoyed all of them.
Not for the faint hearted though!
