Product Description

When you’re human in a supernatural world, life can have unexpected twists.

Cori has spent the last few years trying to get herself back on track after tragedy struck in the worst possible way. She’s opened a business, made new friends, and even helped save lives. Sure, she doesn’t tell anyone about the dark deeds haunting her, but she does her best to make up for them whenever she can. That includes helping her new neighbor, a half-angel who has just spent a hundred years in Purgatory, adjust to modern life.

Bartol is damaged inside and out. The torture he has suffered left him with no desire to interact with the outside world, and so far he’s pushed everyone he knows away. Cori can’t help wanting to do what she can for the traumatized immortal—even if it requires being a little pushy—because she’s drawn to him for reasons she can’t explain. And, anyway, a little crankiness has never been enough to scare her off.

But her plans are about to come crashing down when a man from her past returns with vengeance on his mind. He’s not human anymore, and he wants Cori dead. In the end, it might not be her saving Bartol, but the other way around.

Word Count- 92,000 words

This is the first installment in the Dark Destiny Series (a spin-off from the Sensor Series). It will feature the same couple for three novels.

For anyone who has read the sensor series and loved it, you won't be disappointed. This book is a perfect accompaniment, it draws you in just as much and leaves you wanting more.

I really enjoyed this book especially because I wasn't done with characters from the sensor series. Two unlikely, damaged people who no matter how dark things become, dare to hope. An other great book from Susan Ilene.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yeayyy!!!! 30 March 2017

Omg when my email told me a new book by Susan came out I was ecstatic. Did not realize there was one on the way and it being about my favorite Alaskan clan it was even better.
Ok ok well what can I say....I liked it, I'm sorry I can't say I loved it like all other ones but I for sure liked it. I think because the connection between Lucas and Mel was so strong in the other series that I was expecting something like that here. Almost but not quite. The H and h are good but she does annoy me a little bit. I just can't connect with her that well. Besides like always is great if not a little predictable and i did enjoy the whole Zoe thing. Cannot wait for the next book....hopefully won't have to wait long
PS - Can we PLEASEEEEE get a book on that crazy Angel - or wait what is he now - that lives in the shed behind Mel and Lucas house. I know we had a sample book with him (sorry am not going to try to spell his name...just call him K lol, but damn a full one would be amazing. Now that's a character you can do WONDERS with.

5.0 out of 5 stars I've missed this world! 8 April 2017

Cori and Bartol have a rather tenuous relationship. Bartol is a reclusive nephilim and Cori (a local business owner), sees him as a challenge. I loved both of these characters in the Sensor series, and it was great to see them develop in their own book.

Cori is strong and independent, and we learn throughout the book how she got to be this way. She still has some of her own demons to slay, but she is determined to help Bartol move own from his own past as well – whether he wants her help or not!

I felt the pacing of this book was very good. I was engaged from start to finish. I'm so glad the author has decided to make this a three book series, as I believe these characters, and especially Bartol, deserve to have their stories told (and hopefully a very happy ever after)!

It was great to catch up with characters from the Sensor series too. I've missed Melena and co. If you haven't read the Sensor series, I highly recommend it, although it's not completely necessary to read it before this book.

Destined for Shadows is a spinoff from the excellent Sensor series. It's about Cori and Bartol, who have been in previous books. Cori is human and owns a tattoo shop in Fairbanks. She has known about the supernatural community for a few years having helped out Melena, the sensor from the previous series. Bartol is a nephilim: half angel and half sensor. He's about 1800 years old and has spent the last 100 years in Purgatory being horribly tortured mentally and physically. That has left him with crippling PTSD and a horribly disfigured face. The guardian in Purgatory burned Bartol and left one half of his face stunningly beautiful and one half grotesque and frightening. Bartol finds it very difficult to touch or be touched, he has flashbacks, he's compulsive about keeping his cabin clean, and he has difficultly leaving it.

Cori has never had a problem with Bartol's face and was very natural around him in previous books. Now Bartol has moved out of Melena's house and his cabin is near Cori's. She brings him food every few days. He never had to cook for himself and is having trouble adjusting to the modern world. Bartol lives on canned soup, baked potatoes and whatever Cori brings him.

Cori's violent ex-husband, who should be dead, starts harassing her. It starts with a note on her door and escalates to him showing up at her house. Cori tries to shoot him, but he disappears. The ex-husband, Griff, continues to threaten her. Bartol, Melena, Lucas, and Bambi (the local troll) all work on finding Griff before he kills Cori.

This is an exciting book, made more so because the characters are fully formed. These are adults with histories that have affected them in many ways. I found Bartol very interesting in the Sensor books and I'm really happy that he and Cori are getting their own three book series. Their relationship is a slow burn romance because there is so much for the characters to sort through within themselves. This book is a great mix of action and really good characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Susane Illene does another great series! 31 March 2017

I'm a huge fan of Susan Illene's supernatural fantasy books. I've read her sensor series and some of the spin-off stories, and dragon books. What I like about her works is that she tells a great story every time, and she always wonderfully explores her characters. All the detail that she packs in about so many characters you would think they are real people. Destined for Shadows is no exception. I really enjoyed learning more about Cori and Bartol. Cori is a great, strong character with underlying vulnerabilities and a past. I appreciated though, that Cori's strength and tough personality was believable because sometimes Melena can be a bit annoying because she's almost too headstrong. As a reader you are rooting for Bartol to get better after his torture in Purgatory, but Illene keeps you guessing as to whether that will happen in the end. And of course it was fun having characters from the Sensor series pop-up here so their characters get keep getting developed as well. This book left me even more curious about the nerou and their next story, particularly Tormod.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 31 March 2017

Wow I loved this! Cori and Bartol are just so tortured but perfect for each other. And even though they both have dark pasts, this book is not at all angst-y. It flows really well and the writing is fast paced. The twists were perfect. Definitely recommend this book, but I personally think the reading experience is enhanced if you've read the sensor series first so you have all the background on the other characters as well.
