Review
Praise for Craig Johnson: "It's the scenery--and the big guy standing in front of the scenery--that keeps us coming back to Craig Johnson's lean and leathery mysteries." -The New York Times Book Review "Johnson's hero only gets better--both at solving cases and at hooking readers--with age." -Publishers Weekly

A too cold dish of revenge.

Another superb outing with my favourite lawman but...this should have been a five star, my usual rating for this writer, however the tone of this book is so unrelenting bleak at one point I felt as exhausted as Longmire. I can't say I thoroughly enjoyed this or will ever read it again. We follow Walt as he leaves Wyoming and goes into the Badlands of Mexico in order to rescue his daughter who has been kidnapped by an old enemy, Tomas Bidarte, the baddest of the bad. And that is the problem; this book is so packed with unrelenting bad and vicious folk it grinds you down. There is very little of the usual heartening humour and Longmire has to endure so much torture and dashed hopes you being to think, "Oh, no, not again", when yet another violent setback hits. Mentally exhausting. I nearly gave up but hung on with Walt to the end. Glad he got this one out of his system. Look forward to being back in Wyoming, supping a cool beer at the Red Pony, enjoying the company of Henry Standing Bear and Walt, all in hopefully the next book.

Not one of his best

The author is trying something different here. The usual characters are missing, which I must admit was a welcome break. But I must say I found it a little cluttered and hard to follow at times. In fact it is truly awful. I said after the previous one that that would be my last, but Covid-19 self-isolation tempted me to read another. It would need to be WW3 or the Zombie apocalypse before I read another.

Good but not his best

I have read all the Longmires... this is as usual fast paced and well written. I just get a bit fed up when, in crime series, there seemingly has to be a 'Moriarty figure' - some evil genius who crops up in several stories to pit his wits, and strength, against the hero... it makes for rather formulaic thinking.
I hope that Johnson will return to one-off stories with new adversaries in future.

Walt rides to the rescue...

This one surprised me. I went into the story not expecting a great deal, as I hadn't particularly enjoyed The Western Star. However, it turned out to be a good read, an action story crossed with a western. Not enough of Vic and Henry but Walt managed well without them. I don't think I'm spoiling the story by saying that it was a little unlikely that Walt made it to the end after all if he didn't there wouldn't be any more books! Ah well, another long wait for the next one....

Have read all the Longmire mysteries to date. Felt obliged to buy this one because of the cliff-hanger end to "Western Star". Disappointed, reads much more like a Lee Child 'Jack Reacher' story. Almost no Vic or Henry.
I don't think I'll bother next time.
Edit:
Just received "Lethal White" yesterday Robert Galbraith's (aka JK Rowling) latest. Haven't read it yet but at 600 pages and £10 I'm already feeling that it's better value.
