Product Description

Four years ago, Alex, a second son, had planned a life together with Lady Patience. However, when Patience was betrothed to his brother, the heir, Alex left his family's estate and joined the military.

Alex returns to assume the title Duke of Bedford when his brother unexpectedly dies. He is unprepared for both his new responsibilities and the reunion with Patience. The horrors of war are a heavy burden, and when he learns that Patience never married his brother, he is stunned.

Patience withstood the bullying of her fiancé and her father for four long years. She refuses to marry Alex just because he's the duke, especially if he no longer loves her. How would that be better than what she has already endured? Promises made in their youth are not enough to overcome the changes life has wrought for them but love can grow and transform, if only Patience could believe that.

Each book in the Lords and Ladies in Love series is a standalone story that can be enjoyed out of order.

Alex and Patience fell in love four years ago until it was decided that she was to marry his brother. Now after his brother's death, Alex has returned home to take over his brother's position as Duke of Bedford. Discovering that Patience never married his brother, Alex is determined to win her back. But military life has left him suffering nightmares and uncertain he'll ever be able to give Patience the love she deserves. Will Alex be able to convince Patience that they deserve a second chance at happy ever after, or will the secrets he's keeping from her tear them apart?

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Hutton, and now that I've had the chance to read one of her books, I'll be looking forward to reading more because this story was enchanting, kept me entertained from start to finish due to the main characters back stories and their history, and had me smiling throughout as the heroine does her best to drive the hero crazy with wanting her. The way this story started had me charmed by this couple and their instant chemistry, yet also had me sympathizing with the pair because of what happens that tears them apart.

As for the dialogue, it was captivating and intense due to the main characters back stories that has made the heroine weary to trust and the hero suffering from his time in the military. It is also intense due to the battle the hero is facing with a dangerous man from his past that poses a huge threat to his and Patience's safety. Moreover, I felt sorry for the heroine when it comes to her father. The man is a bully of epic proportions, and I liked that she had someone to finally defend her against the man. I also liked how the heroine challenged Alex and made him work to get their relationship back to how close they were four years ago.

Alex was the ‘spare’ son, second in line to his family’s Dukedom, looked over by society and his family, tormented by his bully of an older brother, Cyrus, they could not be more chalk and cheese. Just as disheartening as his brother, were his parents. Cold and distant, they spared no time for the second son, and no affection either. All in all his home life was pretty miserable.

A glimmer of hope for future happiness though appeared when Patience and her family came to visit. He and Patience shared an immediate connection, gravitating towards each other, spending all their time together. Even though it was a whirlwind romance, they declared their love and pledged to wait for each other till Patience was older and Alex was settled in a career. Fate, however, stepped in and Patience found herself being betrothed to cruel Cyrus. Devastated, Patience resisted, but the handshake agreement was done and dusted, her father leaving her in no uncertain terms what her fate would be if she refused. Right here I should give a trigger warning. The treatment Patience receives at the all too often harsh hand of her father is distressing but it is an integral part of her character growth and inner strength.

Unable to accept that his future had been ripped out of his hands and heart, Alex flees the family estate and purchases a commission in the military, knowing that there is no way he can stop the marriage between Cyrus and Patience without scandalous consequences. Over the next four years he endeavours to forget Patience, dedicating himself to serving his country and putting as much distance, physically and mentally between his memories and his present moment. Oh how I felt for Patience and Alex. Their story was heartbreaking.

3.0 out of 5 stars A heroine I would have left at the altar. 14 July 2017

Patience...ok, I really wanted to like her. I wanted to feel bad that she'd been manipulated by a rotten father and disgusting fiance. I wanted to be happy when Cyrus died and she didn't have to marry him...but then she turned into a selfish, bratty little girl. Alex had instead of trying to work things out with him, instead of trying to see why Alex was different, she just became horrible to him. Nope, a heroine has to have something about her that makes me loyal to her...I got nothing from Patience. Alex should have walked away from her forever.

It started out really good love at first sight but she was only sixteen and he was 21 and then things went downhill from there I'm not a writer and I don't ever want to be one but I could just slap both of them he's being high-handed I don't know what she is. I like all her other books so far this one was not one of her best but you can't expect Perfection all the time

Lovely quintessential Callie Hutton Regency novel. I am not a big fan of this era- however Callie Hutton has a way of enticing a reader with a great story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Misinterpreted love 10 July 2017
By eyes.2c - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Patience suffered! Suffered a lost love, suffered an unenviable betrothal to a man who preferred courtesans, suffered a brutish father and then had to suffer marriage to a man who didn't give her choices.
As she considers her situation she realizes her whole life has been one of no choice! What Patience wants is to be courted! Is that too much to ask?
Alex, bemused and frankly out of touch, as he is fresh from six years as a soldier, firstly at Waterloo and later working with the war office. His latest assignment was to bring home a traitor--Lord Loverly. It was on the voyage home that Alex discovered his brother had died in highly salacious circumstance. Alex was now the Duke-a Duke with many problems. How to confront his situation and his brother's wife, Alex's youthful love. Added to that is the news that Loverly has escaped. He is now a threat to Alex's person and also Patience's.
Which all means that the situation is ripe for misinterpretation and bungled communication between Alex and Patience.
I was intrigued by the couple of mentions of Loverly's daughter who has disappeared. Are we going to come across her in the future? Mmm!
Frankly there were times when I was just plain annoyed with the two central characters.
It feels that denial works both ways. Alex really wants to deny the dukedom but just plain can't and Patience wants to deny Alex if he can't treat her in the way she wants, which she finds hard to give voice to.

4.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't look away 12 July 2017

Patience and Alex were a charming pair who made me yell at them over and over. I like it when an author can get me to do that. There is one part (Chapter 19 to be specific) where I felt Patience's reaction was not right...her character didn't seem to do what I'd been led to expect her character would do. Of course, that led to the Big Black Moment for both characters.

Alex is a second son who never belonged--not even in his own family. Patience was simply something to be used to get her father something he wanted. The two characters are pretty damaged before they ever come together. It was that damage that made them interesting but also made me cringe. The abuse in the book is mild considering but the mentioned, but unseen, abuse comes across far worse. It was hard to read. But, for me, it was part of what made me love the characters.

Would I buy more? I bought the other two in the series when I was about halfway through this one so yes. I would buy more. Hutton is a mesmerizing writer. I couldn't look away even when I wanted to.
