Product Description

Lord Vandeimen returns home from Waterloo to ruined estates, his family all dead. His attempts to recreate something of his heritage leave him deep in debt, and he is ready to commit suicide when a woman bursts into his room with an extraordinary proposal. Mrs. Maria Celestin, widow of a wealthy foreign merchant, will pay him a small fortune to pretend to be her betrothed husband for six weeks.  Van cannot refuse, but he is wary of this outrageous good fortune. He is also intent on getting into the widow’s bed. He doesn’t expect to be dragged back into life, and into love, or into a battle to win the woman who bought him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet! 6 November 2016
By Lori - Published on Amazon.com

Reading through The Company of Rouges series and this short story was next in line. Connected to the series but branched off with side stories of three friends all named George and born close together. This first "George" ended up with the nickname of "Demon". Like his nickname he had strong emotions from being in battle and a string of events leaving him feeling lost and hopeless. He tries to kill himself but even that backfires but in a good way. He is saved by a woman who "hires" him to play a part as her besotted escort to fend off money hungry suitors. She is a rich widow. At least that is the premise for hiring him. I encourage you to read this story because there is a lot of underlying intrigue and two wounded people who find each other by circumstances😊

2.0 out of 5 stars A terrible offering for what had been a good series. 24 January 2016
By Lunarose - Published on Amazon.com

Worse book in the series. It had a good start but quickly fell apart. While the story switched between the POV of the two main character's, far to much of the store was simply happening in the mind of Maria. Van falls in love with her but the reader never really has any sense of it as nothing about him falling in love with her is ever told in the sections told from his point of view. There were huge sections of the story that could have been fleshed out to tell a much better story that would engage the reader far more than this one did. This story should have been one of those 99 cent stories as paying 2.99 before tax was way to much for such a pathetic little story. It felt like Jo Beverley started the story and got really bored with it so she fit it together, wrote a few parts to bridge the gaps and then it was published with the knowledge that most people would purchase it on the strength of her name alone. The only reason this has a two instead of only one star is because the bones of a great story are in there.

5.0 out of 5 stars the Demon's Mistress 8 June 2014

Jo Beverely is one of my favorite writers. Love her books. I don't know why I love reading books in this era of England with dukes, rogues, etc. I have never been disappointed with any of her books, I find them most enjoyable. Started reading her books in 2001. How wonderful to find a book of her family series that was not found at the time they were written and now to be able to fill in the gaps, is wonderful. I have read 20 of her books, so far and when you keep a log of books you have read, you can remember a lot about series she has written. Love her.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Written! 27 November 2015

Jo you did it again! I however wish the story would have been longer like the others. It seems I just started reading and it was over!

I have a fabulous idea Jo, why not bring Dare back to life? I'm sure you could weave a plot that would find that he was badly wounded and didn't remember who he was, only bits and pieces come back to him. ... This would be wonderful for a rouge reunion don't you think?

I hope I have the Dragons Bride and the other one you mentioned . I'm anxious to read hem now

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Story. 7 June 2015
By Spot The Borg Cat - Published on Amazon.com

Jo Beverley writes a great little novel about a younger Hero (by 9 years) to the Heroine. An unusual occurrence in Historical Romance and the era. Some readers may not take the Heroine's trepidation over her age difference seriously, but it was a concern at that time. Breeding being one of the most important occupations of the day for women.
I very much liked the drama in the opening paragraphs. Depression for former soldiers was and is a problem. The Heroine and her Aunt are very astute in their observations and do a great deal to help heal the troubled and lonely Hero.
I recommend this book.
