3.0 out of 5 stars Darkly attractive rakish hero and sensible heroine brought together by the supernatural spirit who requires a bride 20 October 2016

This is an early work (written in 1991) of the author, and a short novelette. It is a cute story of a handsome rake and an honorable and ordinary rector's daughter, and the ancient folklore custom of Walpurgis Night. I liked the way Rachel's struggle was depicted - between what she knew to be prudent and her desires. I liked the way the aspects of the earth spirit's celebration were revealed, slowly building the tension, and the way the demon was compared to the darkly attractive earl - in the end, the "demon" being quite different. The character development however wasn't very detailed and some issues were only hinted at (the way Rachel saw the younger, more innocent version of the Earl behind the jaded facade, and the reformation of the Earl was not very realistic. He reformed in part by seeing his damsel in danger and in part by being part of the supernatural experience together with her. Without the supernatural, it might have ended as a typical seduction story without a happy ending: except for the physical attraction, there was no reason Rachel should have trusted him to become/remain a good husband.
All in all, it was a good easy short read

Good story and OK characters but not something you're going to want to re-read again and again. I was on a Jo Beverly kick and just kept getting new books with my Christmas money

But an interesting 'take' on ancient customs. Plus Beatrice and Benedick... A real page-turner! Kept me intrigued to the not-quite-predictable ending.

5 stars. With the research & history she puts into all her work, her stories are exciting, intelligent & fun to read. Watching the characters develope in unique situations while sharing all that history that she's learned means that all her books are keepers and have a permanent home on my shelves.
