Product Description

My father owes a debt.
I am his currency.
I’m supposed to marry the recently crowned mafia king of the Foley family as repayment for my father’s transgressions. I don’t understand why the Foleys would want me, but I’ve grown up in a crime family, and I know the ugly consequences of not doing what you’re told.
But as the wedding date approaches, the deal changes, and I’m about to be wed to a man I know nothing about. In fact, I don’t even know his last name.
Instead of becoming a mafia princess, I’m marrying the henchman.
After one look at him, I’m not sure I’ll survive the wedding night.

This one's not for me. The idea grabbed me, obviously, but there was something lacking. Perhaps the fact there was no build up between the MC's, I'm not invested.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shay Savage once again held me captive with this fast paced thrilling novel. 21 June 2017
By shellbelle - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Shay Savage's latest release, Deklan, is one of those books that immediately captures the reader's attention and holds them hostage until the very last word.  It is a sexy romantic suspense in the dark chilling underworld of organized crime, the Irish Mafia.  An innocent young woman is used as a pawn to control certain members who are off the rail and have questionable loyalties.  One of those members is her father who readily traded her to erase his gambling debts.  The other member is the enforcer who has to prove his loyalty to his new boss, the son of the man who gave him a chance to escape the abusive life he had as a child.  A new ruthless and psychotic boss has taken the reigns.  Loyalties are being tested.  No one's life has any value and everyone has to prove their worth or die. Whether they are innocent bystanders or jaded members, everyone is a victim of Sean Foley.  Now it's a matter of survival in his ruthless world.

Kera O'Conner was betrothed to the mafia prince Sean Foley at the age of fifteen to pay back her father's gambling debts.  Her father was a key player for the mafia that laundered money through his businesses for the mafia.  Kera was kidnapped and held for ransom by unknown players for his debts.  Her father was forced to go to the Foley's to get the ransom money.  He readily agreed to repayment by betrothing his young daughter to the spoiled son of the Foley family.  Kera has accepted her fate and is willing to honor her father's debt.  She's grateful to be alive and marrying into the Foley family guarantees her future.  On the day of the wedding the agreement is changed.  Rather than marrying the man she was promised to she's forced to marry his enforcer, Deklan Kearney, a complete stranger.

Deklan Kearney is shocked when Sean Foley demands that he marry Kera O'Conner.  He has to prove his loyalty to Sean and the family.  He vows that he will honor the family and honor Kera as his wife.  He will protect her, take care of her, and give her a life she's worthy of living.

Two strangers are bound together in marriage.  What they didn't anticipate was falling in love.  They also didn't anticipate the past coming back in full force and placing Kera's life in danger once again.  They also didn't anticipate the betrayal that could take both of their lives.  The only thing they can do is survive their world and hold onto their love.

Shay Savage once again held me captive with this fast paced thrilling novel.  The story itself focuses more on the romance rather than the dark dealings of the mafia, which can overshadow the romance.  It has the perfect combination of romance and dark suspense.

4.0 out of 5 stars hit or miss 21 June 2017

I will be honest. This author is a hit or miss for me. However, this book was mostly a hit for me. The story included a protective and faithful alpha hit man, Deklan. He was faithful the heroine, Kera. There was no OW drama and no reference was made to his past sexual experience other than he never brought women to his home. The story flowed well and at no time was I bored while reading it. I read it in one sitting. Also it had hot sexy times including the wedding night scene where Kera gave Deklan her v-card. The story has a HEA ending with epilogue.

There are only two things that I wish were different. For one, the story was told solely from Kera’s point of view. It would have been a better story if it also included Deklan’s view point. He was the more interesting character as opposed to Kera who was a 20-year-old virgin who came off as naive and ditzy. Also I wish there were at least a few scenes were Deklan displays jealousy. It would be easy enough to do given how overly protective Deklan is of Kera. Also other men showed her attention that is not surprising given that she was described as very attractive. However Deklan did not seem to have a problem with it. For example she worked with a flirty attractive man but that did not bother Deklan. Also even though he would not marry her, Deklan’s boss still found her attractive and made that clear but again, Deklan response was more protective as opposed to possessive.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want my own dirty talking henchman! 21 June 2017

5 Dirty Talking Henchman Stars!

I fell in love with Deklan! Holy smokes that guy is the sweetest henchman I've ever read!! And the mouth on that man is very dirty....and I loved every single word!!

I've read quite a few of Shay Savage's books and I'm amazed at how she can write such different types of books. Each one is so unique and so different from her other works. And it's always something that hasn't been done before.

With Deklan I loved reading about the mafia angle and loved that instead of marrying the mafia son, she has to marry Deklan the HENCHMAN! But with typical Savage fashion she manages to blow my mind with the story. It was not what I was expecting at all! Kudos to her for keeping this gal who reads several books a week in her toes!

Grab your copy, you are going to want to meet Deklan!!

Overall Opinion: Meh. I was expecting more after the rave reviews tbh. I enjoyed Deklan, but Kera drove me nuts! I guess she was young, and her immaturity should have been expected -- but I just wanted to shake her! The criminal organization drama was enjoyable for what it was, but it was a little predictable. I wouldn't say I hated the story, but I definitely didn't love it either.

**See for my full review with spoilers**

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Kera and Deklan's story. They have met a few times casually, and are shocked when they are ordered to marry one another to settle Kera's father's debt. They follow through with the order, and the more time they spend together the more feelings start to develop. There is a good bit of crime boss drama and some sexy times...and they get a HEA ending.

POV: This was told in Kera's POV. I think it would've added a lot to the story to have Deklan's POV too.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed, and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings (not much, but I wouldn't classify it as instalove).

H rating: 4 stars. Deklan. I liked him. I think because I liked him it made it even harder for me to like the h.

h rating: 2.5 stars. Kera. She bugged me a good bit. She would go from sniveling submissive type to a demanding brat! Not a h I appreciate...

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Not really.

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

Safe sex: No

OW/OM drama: Yes, but not in the typical way

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Closure: This had pretty good closure with a jump ahead epilogue and a HEA ending.

How I got it: I paid the $3.99 for it on Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Generally enjoyable forced marriage plot 24 June 2017
By Helen - Published on

I do love the arranged or forced marriage plot! This book started off very strong. Savage usually writes from only one POV and typically it is the man's so it made an interesting departure to see this from Kera's perspective. Their wedding night scene in which Kera is a virgin was surprisingly well-written and believe it or not, actually pretty funny while still being sexy.

Unlike many arranged marriages plots, Deklan and Kera got along well immediately (after she realized he did not mean to kill her that is). I liked their relationship, however the book began to drag a bit in the middle. I found parts somewhat unbelievable like what really happened when Kera was kidnapped as a teen. Also the structure of the Foley crime family definitely felt off. There only seemed to be 6 members of this crime organization. No hierarchy or foot soldiers or anything you might expect from a powerful mafia family. It just felt off.

Also, as time went on I liked Kera less. She cried a bit too much for my taste, lot's of leaking and running. She constantly asked Deklan for more details about his daily life as a criminal and yet each time she found out she thought to herself that she was sorry she knew. Ok, if that happened once fine but it happened several times. Spoiler alert: I also found the ending completely ridiculous. Deklan was going to lead the Foley crime family with Kera at his side as a co-leader, sharing everything. What? I love romance books featuring criminals that stay criminals and are not reformed by the heroine but Kera herself just did not seem cut out for a life directly involved in the crime.

Finally, we get to see a glimpse of Evan Arden in this book and that is always a pleasure. Savage, though, has a sadistic streak a mile wide when it comes to Evan. Why can she not give the poor tormented man a lasting HEA (not with a prostitute) and stop torturing him?

I had begun to worry that Savage had permantly moved away from writing the kinds of books I like, so I was relieved to read Deklan. This is definitely not up to some of her previous books like Finding Raine that I loved wholeheartedly, but still is entertaining and ends well. I would give this 3.5 stars so I am rounding up to four.
