Product Description

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Deanna Chase, the first book in the Destiny series.

Defining Destiny is a New Adult romance with light paranormal elements.

When destiny fails…

Singer-songwriter Lucy Moore thought her life was perfect. At just twenty-one, she’s already met her soul mate and together they’ve landed a recording contract. But when her father dies and the love of her life betrays her in more ways than one, she returns home to pick up the pieces. On the shores of Mendocino, California, Lucy has some decisions to make. Should she start a solo career? Or should she leave it all behind for some semblance of normalcy in the quiet town she grew up in? And what about Seth, the tortured artist who always seems to be there when she needs him?

Seth Keenan has demons of his own. Eighteen months ago, he was involved in a horrific accident that he never talks about. His career as an accomplished oil-paint artist has been abandoned, replaced by the buzz of his tattoo gun. And women—well, he never sticks around for longer than a few hours of pleasure… until he meets Lucy. After one evening of listening to her seductive voice, he’s pulled under. But what about the vow he made to never get close to anyone again?

In a world where everyone has one true soul mate, can these two find love in the arms of each other?

Loved it fom start to finish the premise of an alternate universe where everyone has a soulmate destiny is interesting watching 2 wonderful characters struggle against their defined soulmate destiny to follow their true hearts desire and enter into a relationship based on unconditional love is magical yes both main characters face a lot to get there loss, pain, suffering but in the end they find each other and fight to keep each other no matter about soulmate destinies. Lucy and Seth have had such different lives both met their soulmates early and with such a strong magical pull of their soulmate destiny they both at times struggled with their gifts that were fuelled stronger by their soulmate destiny and when Seth lost his soulmate he thought that was it as far as love went until he met Lucy and for Lucy to find your soulmate is doing everything behind your back to force you to stay tied to him because he knows his on musical talent is not enough to live the rock star life he craves without Lucy is just devastating all the lies, manipulating and cheating is just mre than Lucy should ver had to endure but she finally finds out what her soulmate is really all about and she does everything she has to so she can finally live her life her way with Seth her true love.
So true unconditional love wins in the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Love Lucy 5 October 2014
By I read way too much - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I have a love/hate relationship with this book. I realize I may be a minority Reviewer, but this Review simply reflects MY opinion and feelings on the book. I firmly believe, as in a lot of things in life -beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That holds true to books as well. There are times I read a book and it's exactly the feel and world I need at that moment and I fall absolutely in love with it. Only to try to return to the same feeling at a later date and it just can't seem to hold my interest. With all that explanation out of the way, back to the book at hand. Ah, yes, my love/hate.
If you are at all squeamish about spoilers, look away now. If you're not, then I am afraid I will have to include a little to adequately present my thoughts on this book.
There is a small paranormal taste in this story. And that is one of the things that I both loved and hated in this author's world. There are "Soul Mates" who are born to be the other half of each other. These soul mates can be both opposite and same sex. Once together, they have a "magical" gift to share with the world. And yes, these are "Romantic" connections. Some of the gifts described in the story include cooking, farming, painting, and singing. This was a very cool and unique concept. Unfortunately, it was also disconcerting and disappointing. These Soul Mates may not even be in love or happy with one another and still the pull was so strong that it could utterly destroy them. I hated that! The story begins with the heroine, Lucy. You can tell by my title that I really loved this character. She is trapped in the destiny that is her mate, Caden. Caden is horrible! He is not good for her at all. He is self-centered, cruel and a cheater. Lucy is completely absorbed by him. He make all of their decisions with no regard at all for Lucy and her needs and happiness. I won't go into it here, but this really is a parody to real life and some of the dependent women I have seen. At any rate, Our Lucy is so strong! She reaches deep inside to fight the magical pull and leave Caden to regain her sanity and self. She is definitely a kickin' leading lady! She meets Seth who has lost his "Mate" in an accident 18 months before and is a shell of a person from her loss. Seth and Lucy form a sort of friendship with benefits. We're introduced to Lucy's "best friend," Jax. So here comes my hate for this story. Lucy was such a great character. She deserved to be First to someone, folks. I just couldn't stand this! She's not first with Caden, even with the Soul Mate thing, he's only concerned with Caden. She's not first with Seth, cause he "will never have a connection" like he had with Elsa (his soul mate)..no really, he says this. Let's get started on this so-called BFF, Jax. I hated this little piece of work. She gets jealous of Lucy and Seth's "hook-up" and treats Lucy horribly. She won't pick up the phone when Lucy is in a desperate crisis situation. Oh, wait she FINALLY listens to her voicemail and calls Seth when she can't find Lucy. And yeah, yet again Seth tells Jax, "she (Lucy) will never take your place with me." So what does that make her to Seth now..um, let's see THIRD??? Then of course, you meet Lucy's mother. She too places her "Mate" AND Caden above Lucy! OMG! I was just looking for someone, anyone to put her first. But alas, drama happens - Lucy can't trust anyone. Then, the story ends and I won't finish giving away the ENTIRE plot - but I guess it could be construed as a "happy" ending. So yeah, I loved some things - Lucy, the throat clogging emotion the story invoked, the writing was REALLY good. Hey, what can I say? I don't like being anyone's second choice! And when I read a book, I want to "live" it. I just didn't want to live this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars WTF? Soul mates are either dead or jerks 15 December 2015
By E. Foley - Published on Amazon.com

So torn about this book.

I knew something was afoot when the author included a little letter to the reader about alternate reality where everyone has a soul mate.

What she neglected to tell us is that the soul mates we meet in this one are d*cks... or dead.

And I'm really not sure what the significance of the soul mate thread that was woven throughout the story really meant. In this alternate reality it's possible (apparently) to fall in love and even have relationships/children with someone who isn't your soulmate. Which was a little confusing, and I ended up just thinking what's the point to all this. The author tries to introduce a little mysticism by saying that magical things happen when mates get together, but frankly that's a bit tainted by the death and dickiness.

Lucy's in a band with her mate Caden who is a dick. He sleeps around on her and it turns out he forges her name on some music contracts AND steals a song about her dead father and publishes it under his own name. See? A dick.

So she quits and waits to be sued for breach. Goes back home to deal with the death of her father and meets Seth who lost his mate in a car accident last year. There's an attraction but what's the point when his mate is dead and she's got one even if he's a dick because "they all go back to their mates." I still don't understand this. Then we meet her mother who is a piece of work and who left Lucy's dad when she found her own mate Randy who is also a dick. There's a pattern here.

So poor Lucy is all mixed up and grieving and feeling her way through her issues. And then there's Seth who's an artist who has lost his mojo upon the death of his mate... until he meets Lucy.

Also, no one in this book owns an umbrella or raincoat so they're always drenched and getting naked and sometimes sleeping with each other.

While the story itself was sufficiently compelling, the soul mate thing muddied the waters. I liked the style of writing and I enjoyed Lucy a bit... she could have been more developed.

I won't read book 2 if it's more rain and soul mates who are d*cks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Torn. 26 May 2016

I am torn about this book. I loved Seth and Lucy and their relationship. What I am torn about is that this book completely undermines what I believe a soul mate is. Once you meet that special person, especially if you are magically connected to them, how could you treat them so badly. If it were just a story of Lucy and Seth finding each other after lost/bad relationships I would probably give it more stars, but the soul mate thing makes it weird.

5.0 out of 5 stars a nice quick romance that I wouldn't be embarrassed to be ... 13 January 2016

Very quick read. I was able to complete in a couple hours but I am a rather fast reader. a nice quick romance that I wouldn't be embarrassed to be reading in front of more conservative family (unlike other "colorful" books)

I recommend this book for a nice quick weekend/roadtrip read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Liked but didn't love - not enough detail 1 January 2016

I liked this book. I just didn't love it. I like the paranormal idea that there's a soulmate for everyone. I even like how that it was a magical connection. I just felt as though the description of that connection was overlooked. I wanted to know how you knew they were your mate. Was it instantaneous? Was it only when you kissed them for the first time you knew? What did it feel like to know they were the one?

I think if that was explained to me I would have really loved this book. I would have comprehended the struggle Seth and Lucy dealt with.

Regardless, it was still a good book. I will probably purchase the next one in the series.
