Pacer is the hero but also the bad guy. Confused? I was too, until read the story. I love Pacer and Chesea together. They're lives are different, yet the same. There is always more to TJ Hamilton's books than just a love story and defending Pacer is no exception. The twists and turns kept me guessing right to the epilogue. Love conquering all is a beautiful notion but not always a reality, especialy in TJ Hamilton stories! Congrats on another strong story with sexy non traditional characters.
I received an ARC from the Author for an honest review and purchased a copy as well....
4.5 stars from me..... I loved this story...... We follow the story of Lawyer Chelsea Tanner and her client Paciano "Pacer" Fratelli...... They are total opposites, she is everything good in the world and he is everything bad in the world, and that is what makes this a great story....... Twists and turns you won't see coming.....
I loved this book. It was easy to read, the characters were lovable and the I couldn't put it down until I knew the whole story! It has just the right amount of story and steamy sex scenes. I love when TJ writes from both points of view!!!
Ok, wow! I’ve long since thought that being a criminal defence lawyer must be one of the toughest jobs and how someone could even consider defending someone that had so much evidence stacked against them. With Defending Pacer, TJ Hamilton gives us a glimpse into this world and how corrupt the justice system can be. An ambitious, hard hitting, younger woman is not what is usually pictured when describing a defence lawyer, but with Chelsea, we see both the intelligent, professional fairness as well as personal struggles and opinions. She makes it very easy to empathise and build an understanding of the people in this profession. Obviously the whole falling in love with you client thing isn’t the norm, but this gave way to the person development of Chelsea and Pacer. It was very interesting to read how events and circumstances changed the mindset of Chelsea in particular. One thing I’ve come to expect from a TJ Hamilton book is gritty realness. I think this is most likely attributed to her background. Things are not sugar coated and that makes for very honest stories.
So this read was a difficult one as at first, as I really did not like Pacer one bit... TJ has written Pacer as a gritty no holds barred gangster, with no hint of remorse to what he does... and some of his actions were at my limit of 'OK'.
He want's what he wants's and he gets it his way, and at first his way really - I mean REALLY freaked me out! I have notes on my kindle saying...??? ... omg did he really just think that!!! ... OMG he didnt just do that did he!!!!
BUT I know TJ has a gritty side, she tells it how it is, and because I loved her other series I continued... SO PLEASE if you buy and start reading... and get to that point too, my advise is Carry On, you will be glad to push through the initial 'OMG' moments.
Now Chelsea POV was much easier on the moral compass - shes a woman that has lived and breathed Law all her life, the only daughter of a Supreme Court Judge, her Mother an Editor... she is focused, determined and wins in court, But Defending Pacer is going to turn out to be her most difficult decision she will ever make. I mean she is going to have to either follow her heart or her family's ways, and its a big choice to make.
By 39% I was getting hooked and did not want to put the book down..Ms Hamilton Blew my Panties off!!!
As Chelsea delves into the details of the case against Pacer, we begin to see that there is more to this case than a Gangster murder, Yes Pacer is a 'What you see is what you get, Full on Mafia Killer', but above all he is an Italian Gangster... Loyalty , Familia, these are the True Beliefs that Pacer lives by. He is the head of the 'Family Business', but if you cross him - its the last thing you will do, and you will regret it... VERY SLOWLY and VERY PAINFULLY!
As Chelsea begins to piece the conspiracy together shes also having to deal with the combustion of the fierce attraction she has towards Pacer.
ITS RED HOT... They are like two planets gravitating towards each other... and when they collide, you see stars, heck you see the #@%%!! BIG BANG!!!
So As I said... By 39% I was glued to my kindle, matchsticks on eyes until the wee hours, and then up at dawn reading on!
I am a romantic at heart, I do read Dark Romance, but they need to have a good chunk of Romance & HEA in the horizon, and I would like to say THANK YOU TJ for giving such a great ending... you scared me for a few seconds... well until I turned the page!
If you haven't read TJ Hamilton before, The Thyme series will soon be on a bookshelf near you - THAT series is AWESOME - Do not Pass it up, and if you can't wait - grab the prequel on your kindle along with this book for some Hot Aussie Reading.
ps sorry for all the !!! but it was one of those books that deserves lots of !!!! :D
I love it when an author is able to write a character that is such a pig but still manages to hook me to see if he changes or has any growth.
If it weren’t for Chelsea – the kickass heroine, I might have put this book down and stepped away. She’s smart, she’s committed and she’s strong to deal with what a high profile case like this throws at her.
I really liked how the heroine was the ‘hero’ of the day. The character I just don’t see why people are falling over, is Pacer. He’s a pig. He’s arrogant. And he’s a killer. I just can’t abide the glamourizing of criminals and I think that’s why I faulted with this book.
This is the first of TJ’s work that I have read and I have to say she’s done well. There are some laughable moments and TJ’s writing is succinct. There are nice quirks throughout the story and I will never look at maple syrup the same way again.
I really wish this story had more background story of Pacer. I finished wanting to know how he became the way he did. The book has great pacing and I’m keen to get into TJ’s back catalogue.
I was given an ARC in exchange of my honest opinion.
