Product Description

If you want to read gripping stories that don’t rely on sex, swearing, and graphic violence—you’ve come to the right place!

DEEP MAGIC is a bi-monthly electronic magazine that publishes clean short fiction in the fantasy and science fiction genres (epic, paranormal, steampunk, etc). Our issues are also filled with author interviews, art features, book reviews and tips for writers.

In this issue you'll find an exclusive story for Deep Magic by bestselling author DK Holmberg called "The Price of Healing" - it is set in a new world that he'll be introducing in an upcoming novel. We also showcase a great sci-fi story that we loved called "Between Earth and Exile" by Laurie Tom. Clint Johnson also brings us "The Dealer, the Hag, and the Boy Who Dreamed" and "Not That Kind of Wizard" by day-time attorney Eugene Morgulis. Finally, an enchanting story of love, loss, and dragons in "Autumn at the Dragons Cave" by Kathryn Yelinek.

We've also rounded up a great interview with Shawn Speakman and the multiple hats he wears in the genre. We interview the amazing artist Andree Wallin. Love that sci-fi cover! He did concept art for the latest Star Wars movies. And bestselling author Nick Webb gives us the technical know-how on interstellar travel with his article "Fictional Space Propulsion."

This month we also feature two book excerpts that we think you'll love to purchase. Jeff Wheeler's new Kingfountain book "The Hollow Crown" and a sneak peek at Emily King's debut novel, "The Hundredth Queen" - both are sneak peeks and will be published in June 2017.

4.0 out of 5 stars Anthology - with all that that entails - worth a look 12 April 2017

(I won a free copy via Facebook promo, which seemingly arrived early - finished it that evening)
The issue begins with four short stories, one science fiction, followed by three fantasy. The first, "Between Earth and Exile" doesn't abide the usual, predictable Space Opera tropes, and is the better for it. Though I favor fantasy, I found it the strongest short of the bunch, with the last, "Autumn at the Dragon's Cave" a strong, but distant second. The others aren't bad, just pale next to Earth and Exile.
The magazine then follows with an article about fictional space propulsion, and why physics makes travel between stars impractical in any reasonable time period, urging writers of hard science fiction to keep it in system. I don't dispute the math, but it didn't really fit the rest of the magazine, in my view. Two (very) brief interviews followed, which aren't really my thing, but will no doubt interest some.
Finally, the magazine concludes with two book excerpts, the first, by new Author Emily R. King, is a very promising first work "The Hundredth Queen", which has now made it to my "want to Read" list, being delayed only long enough for the series to be finished before I consume them all in a long sitting. Book Two is scheduled for late September this year, and an unnamed (as yet) third book will (hopefully) soon follow. The second excerpt is from Jeff Wheeler's return to the Kingfountain series with book 4, "The Hollow Crown". This excerpt focuses primarily on the children of characters we met in the first three books, laying the foundations for the patterns of history to be reborn anew. For all that children are the subjects, undercurrents of politic and intrigue are well present, and fans of this work will no doubt sense hints of the Wizr pieces moving into place for the next game. Like the Hundredth Queen, this is also on my must read list, though I won't be able to wait for the release of book 5 later this year before consuming this. Look for a review of that book in mid June.
