The priest in a snow-blanketed Swedish town opens her church and discovers a dead woman on the altar. The corpse is dressed in a wedding gown and clutches a fresh bunch of cornflowers. Fatima Engquist has no signs of violence on her body and the local cops soon call the Stockholm murder squad. Kriminalinspektör Stella Cole lands the case.
Once a rising star at Scotland Yard, Stella calls Sweden home now. She was blackmailed into leaving Britain by an ambitious Home Secretary who knows all about her dark past and is exploiting Stella’s guilty secrets for her own ends.
On the case with Stella are detectives Johanna Carlsson and Oskar Norgrim. As they investigate Fatima Engquist’s murder, another dead woman is found on the same church altar. Also wearing her wedding dress. Also holding a posy of out-of-season cornflowers.
With pressure from her boss and the Swedish media to produce an early result before any more dead brides turn up, Stella Cole needs to be at her sharpest to catch a serial killer who doesn’t even believe he’s evil.

And what a path that leads her on a classic cat and mouse with a deranged serial killer all set against the unfamiliar cultural settings and demands of Scandinavia. Stella never less than committed brings her experience and skills against a political backdrop in a sleepy rural community- as always a compelling and engrossing read and dare I say it - the best Stella Cole yet!
Whether set in London or Sweden Stella Cole stories are never less than gripping and given the story’s ending I cannot wait until the next instalment.
Andy Maslen truly has created a strong character in Stella. Strong willed Stella will stop at nothing to capture the person who is killing young women, dressing them in bride's dresses, and laying them in a Church on the Alter.
Why is the killer doing this? Why does he leave beautiful Cornflowers on their bodies? Has he got a good reason or is he just a stone-cold killer?
Will Stella and Jaimie ever get back together? I hope so. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
On the Negative side, the book finished and I wanted to read more! Can’t wait for his next book!
If you want a good book to get lost in, you won’t go wrong with any of his books.
Lots of twists and red herrings in the hunt for the serial killer murdering women about to celebrate their first wedding anniverary.
But, as things are moving along other things from her past pop up and I wonder if 'kick ass' Stella is about to go rogue again!
