I first read this short novel as a teenager, around the time I first began the Sharpe series. No surprises as both Rifleman Dodd and Richard Sharpe belonged to the 95th Rifles. Forrester's hero is a much less colourful character, though equally adept at soldering and killing the enemy.
There is no sentiment in this novel, no attemt to raise Dodd above his lowly status in life. He doesn't question life or his part in the war. He survuves, plans each day and is focused on his target of reuniting with the regiment that has become separated from him.
I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the Napoleonic Wars. Not as interesting as the Hornblower novels, but pleaurable nonetheless
