This is an automatic favorite book to add to the shelves for making me cry and laugh so much. I swear, it felt like I was crying every few pages, it was so sad. Truly did master the title and make me feel like Agony was a long acquainted friend.
Bash has a secret and a plan that he won't tell Rose about until it's too late, but Rose refuses to give up on him. I thought the whole thing was really sweet and intense when it came to the more gritty things of reality. It was hot, heartfelt and entertaining. A few things felt strung out but when it comes to stubborn people who refuse to change, it can feel like you're immobile. You should read this because of how sweet the love story is, how fast they click and how fast they fall with the obligations and responsibilities thrown between them. The whole thing was dramatic but intense and something I really couldn't put down even if I tried, it was that good. Read it, if you really like contemporary romances with people that need that extra kick for good behavior.

I really enjoyed reading this story. In certain parts it reminds me of Me Before You but it takes a completely different spin on it.
Rose Middleton is a nineteen year old girl who is living on the streets trying to make a living as a street performer. One day she approaches this woman who has been watching her for a few days. Vale runs her own business and offers Rose a job in her Companion service.
Bastien Pascal is Vale's best friend and is fighting a losing battle. As investor in Vale's business, he requests Rose to be his companion. This is Bastien and Rose's story.
It's an emotional and heart-warming story of an unexpected romance.

Amazing agonising delight

I cannot put into words the magic that happens when i read anything by georgia cates. To say i get submerged into a story doesnt really do it justice. Its very powerful the emotions that get dragged out of the depths of you as you immerse yourself in the story. Sometimes its hard to imagine it is a story it is so real. I really liked rose as a character and thought her edge and acumen shows with help, hard work and determination what could be achieved. Sebastian is an enigma to say the least but a very endearing lovable one. Beautiful read.

There is no doubt that Dear Agony could be compared to Me Before You but the story is also completely different. I loved Bash & Rose from the start and what I enjoyed the most was up until the end you didn't know what choice Bash was going to make. I've read nearly all Georgia's books and this just might be my favourite!!

Not a light and fluffy romance
Reviewed in the United States on 15 August 2017Verified Purchase
First, let me say my rating is 2 and 1/2 stars leaning toward a 3 star. The problem is not with editing or grammar and I have to say the beginning of it is very imaginative. I liked the creativity she threw into this book. I loved Rose and Bastian and their easy get along relationship. They are friends immediately. You could tell they just connected instantly. You know this because Rose has dealt with tragedy and, yes, agony until fate leads Vale into her path. Vale is a smart business woman who has known Bastian since he was 2. He helps her start up her business by investing 2 million dollars into her company. Vales business is woman. She has a talent for seeing potential in woman to become companions in the lives of men. It sounds like an escort service but indeed it is very intricate and dignified. There are no precise guidelines for what a companion can provide for her client because that is worked out in a contract prior to agreeing to any assignments these ladies may become involved in.
Rose is homeless and in a dark place no one should be. You know that something bad has happened in her past but upon meeting Vale for the first time Rose sees a glimmer of hope. Fast forward 3 years Bastian requests Rose for his companion. Oh, and let me not forget to mention that he is offers to absolve Vale's 2 million dollar debt with him in return. Right from the start I loved his character. He has kind eyes and a sense of humor. As if that is not sexy enough, he is instantly protective to Rose and her night terrors. He is so compassionate and his only thoughts is wanting to reassure Rose she's safe. What a man! Bash the man, is not as held together as he appears to everyone, however. He thinks he's got all the answers and can control what fate has in store. It is kind of deep when things unfold in stages between him and Rose and it is like Fate itself is teaching him to look at things different. He never saw himself romantically involved with a woman 13 years younger or to have his freedom in his final plans to be questioned not by others but by himself. For all his kindness and cajun flare he is alone in the world besides Vale, and now Rose. That is what drives Bastian to want Rose in his life.
*********************SPOILER*************************
He is diagnosed with ALS and pride has convinced him that in order to die with dignity he will end his life before things get too bad. He wants Rose there for reassurance that he's not alone until the end.
******************END OF SPOILER**********************
Rose and Bastian share everything and eventually no secrets lie between them even what his intentions are for his future. All of this changes when once again fate steps in and the two are in love with each other. There are no games or secrets the two are honest with their feelings and can't stand to be separated. But once occasionally Bastian brings up his original plans out of the blue, it's always under the surface of their relationship. I felt the pain Rose must have felt when in their happy moment Bash reminds her of his intent, it was cruel. That is one of the hardest part of this book. He says he loves her with all his heart but he is so self absorbed with this plan to escape his fate that it clouds how badly he is hurting her. This subject matter is heavy and while the couple are so much in love I recommend you truly think hard about this title before reading this. For me it was so hard. My heart ached with Rose and the pain she endured. She was not just losing her best friend, her companion and heart but also the father of her son.
Bastian was out of control with his words and cold indifference while we as the reader hear his thoughts in his head. We know his heart wants him to accept the baby but his mouth voices the opposite to Rose. God, I was soo mad at how stubborn he was but in the end they do find their own way. Even then it's one of those endings that is not leaving you totally warm and fuzzy in the end. Life happens and all love and endings are not the same. All she wanted was the happiness fate would allow them to have for as long as it would last. Little miracles pop up along the way and it is beautiful what they have. If your looking for a light read steer clear but if what you desire is characters finding their way through the dark and finding another kindred spirit that somehow takes the agony and makes it bearable look no further. My rating while low for a Cates book is primarily for Bastian's selfishness and stubborness toward Rose.
It could be argued that the pain he caused was due to his fear of not controlling his own future and being scared but I thought he was foolish in wasting the precious time any of of have to enjoy what the child they shared growing inside her. He more than makes up for it and took away some of the sting I felt at this beautiful, sexy man but I felt it drug on too long. The amount of pain he caused our h was sort of unforgivable no matter the cause. Vale said it best when she said that the poor girl has never had a soul in her life that didn't disappoint or abandon Rose and she deserved better. The love for her should have helped him see that sooner. Whatever my difference I still love the authors writing but will avoid any books like this in the future. This is a clean read with minor insinuations. The focus is as the title implies, agony. Enjoy, if you dare!

These characters deserved more...
Reviewed in the United States on 28 February 2020Verified Purchase
I really wanted to love this book. I loved the characters and feel that they deserved more/better. I really expected more from this seasoned author. Everything in this book was rushed and honestly lacked substance. Every time the book started to get interesting it would suddenly skip forward several months, leaving you to wonder what the hell just happened?! I expected to see the characters develop and have important life/relationship details emerge not skip forward months at a time and miss all of those details. It honestly made no sense and was a waste of what could have been a beautiful story!
I usually never write bad reviews. I almost always give 5 stars. I did read the Sin Trilogy by this author and loved it. I just expected more from this book
It seemed to only be half thought out and half written. It was extremely disappointing.
