This is not a step-by-step layout of how to be happier. I won't tell you what you *should* do - or get you to set plans for self-improvement that involve 'doing more'. I will explain to you WHY emotions happen, and how they are incredibly useful to your survival. If you are truly open to what I have to say, you will never think to yourself, "I wish I never had to feel anxious or sad or angry again" because you will appreciate the fundamental importance of these experiences.
I will repeat, constantly, that life is about choices and you have the power to make your own choices - and I will help you do that if you feel powerless in your life at present. I am a survivor of mental illness, and I, too, was powerless to change myself - to choose anything else - but I made it. Everything that helped me is in this book. I don't believe in putting bandaids over deep wounds. I believe in helping people understand themselves, look deeply into their personality and experiences, and actively begin to shape their lives into something they enjoy living.
Nothing worth having comes easily, and a life worth living takes effort and struggle. If you are willing to get uncomfortable - even willing to find comfort in your discomfort - you will be able to cultivate a life you believe is worth living. Being open to Dealing with your Sh*t is step 1.
