I'm a former newspaper editor and journalist who, as with most journos, likes drinking and thinks he can write a good novel.

After several decades of writing fiction for myself and my cat, I finally submitted a novel to a local publisher, Melbourne Books, and lo and behold my first novel, Drowning in the Shallows, is now being published.

This is where it gets tricky, as the main character of the book is also a former newspaper journo who likes drinking and is obsessed with cats – and so my main challenge is to try and convince people that this is actually a work of fiction and that none of the characters, with the exception of the cat, are based on anyone I actually know.

The dominating and exceptionally cruel (and yet loveable) cat of the novel, as you might now realise, is absolutely based on a real cat.

As for other details about me: I live in Melbourne, Australia, where the coffee is good but the surf is a two-hour drive away, and when I'm not thinking about surf that I'm missing and cats that I could be stroking I am trying to make money by teaching others about writing and editing.
