I really enjoyed this debut novel in the new series "A Mystery by the Numbers." In this case, the author tells us that this is the latest case in the lives of former police chief, Zach and his wife, Savannah Stone. Being a police consultant after his early disabled retirement allows Zach to bring his brilliant wife along. Savannah is a celebrity in her own right, she authors puzzles for multiple newspapers. As her husband's unofficial partner, she sees patterns in crimes.

This crime hits too close to home for Zach as it involves his former precinct and the Mayor of Charlotte, NC. Meanwhile, Savannah becomes involved with her Uncle Thomas and mysteries left by her deceased Mother.

I instantly felt at home with the Stones and the crimes were credible and well formed. Lucky, for me, I have the next book in the series just waiting for its rise to the top of my TBR pile.

Overbearing and unlike able main character.

I find the main character to be too overbearing and interfering. She is just not a like able person. Everything is about her and what she thinks. Maybe if the author had made the character softer I would have liked it better. As it was I could only force myself to get halfway through the series.

A Little Bit Disappointing

I was looking forward to reading this book, which was billed as "a math puzzle mystery." At first I didn't care for the heroine/narrator Savannah at all; I found her arrogant and with an attitude. As the book progressed and I saw her relationship with her husband, her uncle, and her old friends from Charlotte, I came to like her better. I don't feel we really got to know the suspects all that well, and we learned little or nothing about the first victim. We never learn why these people were targeted.

I did like the twist about Savannah's legacy from her late mother and the revelation that came from it. I have to admit that I was wondering why a 38-year-old woman and her 42-year-old husband, who obviously adored each other, didn't have any kids, especially as her best friend in Charlotte had three. That could be explored in the next book.

My main objection to the book, however, is the total & complete lack of puzzles. Kaye Morgan's Sudoku mysteries always contain several puzzles (with solutions in the back). Other cozy series have recipes for ice cream, cupcakes, etc. This had nothing. At least the grid Savannah used to solve the puzzle could have been shown. I really couldn't visualize it at all.

As it was well written, and as I ended up liking Savannah, it earned three stars. Next time, PLEASE put some actual puzzles into the book.

It took me three days to read the first 40 odd pages. Then I flipped to the back of the book to find out who the bad guy was and called that done. Other people may like the book, but I found it dull and uninteresting.
