Product Description

“This book was amazing from the start. I couldn’t put it down from start to finish.”
–D&T’s Love of Books

Looks aren’t the only things that can be deceiving…

When a sixty-eight-year-old woman is found dead outside the hospital in a wheelchair with an anti-abortion sign strapped to its back, Detective Madison Knight expects it to be an open-and-shut case. On the surface, there are no signs of foul play, but the deeper she digs, the more convoluted the homicide becomes. And when two more bodies appear, including those of a girl just barely old enough to drink and a homeless man, the direct links between the three murders are anything but simple.

Without a consistent MO, Madison doesn’t buy that a serial killer is on the loose, despite the conviction with which her ex-fiancé and fellow detective try to convince their superior. But Madison already has enough to juggle without having to defend her reputation. Debilitating flashbacks of being held hostage by the Russian Mafia mere months before haunt her on an almost daily basis, and the promises she made to herself while in captivity are becoming more and more difficult to keep. Learning to trust is hard enough without constant reminders of what destruction—fatal or otherwise—trusting the wrong person can cause.

Now, as both personal and professional friction within the department mounts, she and her partner, Terry, must figure out what motivation could span generations to cause someone to murder these people. But catching this killer is like grasping at straws, and grabbing the wrong one could mean losing not only her pride but also her boyfriend, her credibility, and her faith in humanity…

5.0 out of 5 stars Grabbed Me! 5 July 2016

The premise enticed me so I bought a Kindle copy of the book from Amazon.

This book immediately grabbed my attention and I was caught up in the story so much that I just did not want to put the book down. Madison Knight is a cynical, tough as nails detective who hates political game playing and kowtowing to her superiors. Her attitude can sometimes come across as brash, but she just wants to figure out the case and get justice for the victims.

I loved Madison - most of the time. Her straight-arrow partner, Terry is an almost perfect match for her feisty personality. Terry’s wife is due to deliver their first child and Terry struggles to juggle home and job, even while Madison is facing down her own personal demons while trying to conquer her commitment phobia.

I am definitely interested in reading the other books in this series. I love the fact that each book is complete and stands on its own so I can read the series out of order if I choose to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deadly Impulse: Be prepared for sleepless nights or non-productive days 7 December 2015

So glad I was a bit behind on my to read list, because I had just finished Carolyn Arnold's Just Cause, when Deadly Impulse hit my bookshelf. If you have not had the chance to experience the Detective Madison Knight crime series, these two books could be read together. But you will want to go back to read the rest of the series to enjoy the masterful way Carolyn Arnold weaves her plot lines with ticklers for future cases, and the continued development of Madison as a person.

Deadly Impulse brings Madison Knight three seemingly related murders to solve, and as usual she jumps into the investigation head first. Even though one case is not assigned to her, Madison does not stand on protocol--a habitual irritant to her boss--and nothing keeps her from following all leads.

Grappling with PTSD from a near-death experience, Madison constantly struggles to keep the vows she'd made to herself if she survived, as well as to honor her partner's request that she never again put herself in harm's way without backup. Can Madison control the headstrong impulsivity that has threatened her life and career over and over again? Especially with three victims calling to her for justice.

And then there's that hunky new guy who clearly wants more than casual dates. Can Madison break the cycle of destructive past relationships to take this chance at happiness?

The pace is fast, with enough plot twists to make the book hard to put down. Carolyn Arnold leaves just enough plot lines open-ended to make you anticipate reading the next book.

This is the perfect book to cuddle up with a mug of hot chocolate or a glass of wine on a cold winter day--or if you're lucky enough, to read on a sunny warm beach!

Carolyn Arnold is on my list of favorite writers--you won't go wrong reading any of the four series she's currently offering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I could have hoped for 30 December 2015

Wow! what a ride! This was a great read and the author should be pleased with what she wrote. Madison is a very conflicted woman, and it shows. I could had done without her remembering so often her experience with the Russian mob but it did turn out to be an important part of the story. Would recommend this book to anyone who loves a mystery. All the clues are there to solve it, just read carefully. Great read, looking forward to the next one.
3.0 out of 5 stars I have read and enjoyed the previous Madison Knight novels 7 November 2015

I have read and enjoyed the previous Madison Knight novels. Deadly Impulse has a suspenseful plot that will keep you guessing on the real perpetrator. However, I found myself aimlessly turning pages during all the Madison Knight monologues where she's constantly second guessing her choices or creating scenarios that hold her back when it comes to her personal life. It's time for the author to get Madison beyond all her previous morass and move her forward with a lively social life and unencumbered romance. By now, it is bordering on reader boredom (at least for me).

All during the book I kept thinking I would figure out where all the characters would end up, but Carolyn Arnold is very good about keeping secrets. You defiantly should read this and see if you have quicker detective skills.
