Southern Arcana, Book Three

Carmen Mendoza was abandoned by her wolf shifter father and raised to steer clear of them by her human psychic mother. But she's still drawn to her wilder side, and she has the trail of shapeshifting exes to prove it. Though she works at a clinic for supernatural creatures, she's managed to escape the attention of her father's legacy-obsessed family--until they need a pawn in their bid for power. Snared by a vicious spell designed to wake her inner wolf, Carmen's only hope is to trust the one man strong enough to soothe her darkest instincts.

Alec Jacobson was the heir apparent to the wolves' ruling elite--until he walked away to marry the woman he loved. She paid with her life. Now he lives as a rebel, a black-sheep alpha who protects the supernatural residents of New Orleans from the wolves' barbaric class system. Too bad he can't protect himself from Carmen's big brown eyes.

The lust that sparks between them is every bit as undeniable as the mating urge. Even if he can save her life, staking a claim on his enemy's niece will turn his city into a battleground. Unless he can find a way to stop breaking the rules--and start making them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alec and Carmen, book three 8 March 2013

As the unofficial Alpha of New Orleans, Alec has played a prominent supporting role in the series. He came from a family with wealth and power, but gave it all up for a human wife. After her murder, he thought to live his life alone-- as a bad ass alpha who looks out for his friends and mentors newly changed wolves. But all that changed when half-human, half-wolf empath, Dr. Carmen Mendoza came into his life and was promptly kidnapped and attacked by a rogue witch. Alec tracks and frees her only to find the powerful mating instinct has hit them both. They learn that Carmen's father hired the witch to turn her into a full wolf, but the spell is botched. Carmen has the instincts of the wolf, but can't change. After an emergency call, they travel to the home of the wolf seer, who binds the spell, saving her life but forever making Carmen fully human. And we have the question--is it instinct or is it love? But we are only about halfway into the book. There is so much more to come for Alec, Carmen and friends in making things right. In my opinion Rogers is one of the best authors in the genre. She is definitely on my reread and recommend lists. I also recommend reading the series in order. It is well worth it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Addition to Series 13 May 2011

I'm not going to go into the plot b/c other reviewers have. I've always liked Alec, and here we got to see his softer side. I was worried anything but the tough guy persona would seem like a personality transplant, but the authors did a great job of revealing Alec's depth through Carmen while remaining true to the character. I thought Alec's dead wife was dealt with extremely well. Since her murder had been the motivating force behind pretty much everything he's done since, it couldn't be glossed over, and Alec's struggles to come to terms with his feelings for his wife and her death as he was falling in love with Carmen was heartbreaking and inspiring.

I love the introduction of the Mendoza family, but the underlying story about her father trying to force Carmen to becoming a wolf fell flat for me. I do hope to see more of Carmen's brothers Julio and Miguel. Much to my surprise, I was on the edge of my seat during the political scenes re. the Conclave and Council seats (I don't follow real life politics, so I get bored when reading about supernatural political problems).

We got to see Jackson, Derek and Nicole, Kat and Andrew, and Michelle and Luciano (I really hope these two get together), which was nice. The authors have a way of keeping readers up-to-date with other characters without interupting the flow of the story.

Overall, this was a quick read with lots of romance (maybe too much for my taste) and action. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars.
4.0 out of 5 stars Sexy Alpha Werewolf [...] Baby! 10 January 2011

OMG! I could not put this book down. Not only does my favorite wizard, Jackson, play an integral role in the plot but the sexual tension between Alec and Carmen is off the charts!

In the previous two books in the series, Crux and Crossroads, Alec comes across as controlling, angry, and ornery. Everyone is scared of him because of his past shenanigans, everyone thinks he's a crazy old alpha [...]. Alec is crazy all right - like a fox! I never thought of Alec as sexy in the other books but my opinion quickly changed when I started reading Deadlock.

When Alec and Carmen first meet, Alec pulls the normal "I'm in control. I'm handling this" alpha routine. Carmen knows just how to handle him. She doesn't back down but gives just enough to make Alec feel like he's in control. When Carmen's life is in danger, Alec immediately comes to her rescue. He sees it as his responsibility to protect her even though he's leery of getting too close to her due to an incident in his past that he hasn't yet to come to terms with.

What I liked best about Deadlock was the sexual tension and verbal foreplay between Alec and Carmen. This is the first time I wanted the smex to hold off for as long as possible! The dirty talk was that damn good. Alec can't keep his distance or hands off Carmen. The attraction is palpable even though at times he questions if it is real.

Like with the other books in the series, the majority of the plot centers around the wolf politics; the old guard vs the new guard. Things get downright dirty and dangerous and it's up to Alec, Andrew and Carmen's brothers, Julio and Miguel, to step in. As usual, the wolf politics aspect of the plot doesn't interest me as much. I'm all about the relationship.

There are enough characters where this series could continue for a long while and I hope it does. The next book, Cipher, is Andrew and Kat's story. I may be in the minority but I kinda want Andrew to end up with someone else. But who's to stay that he ends up with Kat? I hope that Carmen's brothers, Julio and Miguel, continue to be a presence in the series.

Deadlock is a great read and a great addition to the Southern Arcana series. I think I may like it a smidgen more than Crux. I love Jackson. He's still my man. But Alec and the dirty talk...rawr! And he has a beard. I love a man with facial hair. He can lock me up in a cage anytime!
4.0 out of 5 stars I'm telling you I'm hooked with these wolves! 24 December 2012

I'm telling you I'm hooked with these wolves!

Alec has been taking care of all the supernaturals of New Orleans for quite some time, always by the sidelines never in the frond row but when Carmen is treated wrongly by her own family Alec just can't let it rest.

Alec and Carmen share a pretty hot romance, but I felt like their path was already set for them, too much love way to soon.

I liked this book alot but what kept me till the end was all the sideplots in their story, Kat and Andrew, the Mendoza brothers, the Peyton sisters and little AJ. Every favorite character makes a natural appearance in the story and plays their important part.

Really can't wait for Andrew and Kat's HEA!

If you're into the "were" type stories. Make sure to read this series by Moira Rogers. It's not just about wolves changing into people or vice versa. There's a story line there the really keeps you enthralled. This series pulls you into the story and makes you want to keep reading the next one. It takes a great writer to keep you interested in the story line to want to read the rest of their books.
