Product Description

From the world of the bestselling Lexi Graves Mysteries…

Shayne Winter thinks she has everything she ever wanted: a job as chief reporter at The LA Chronicle, a swish, new apartment in a fabulous neighborhood, and a California-cool lifestyle. But on the very first day, it all goes horribly wrong. The apartment is less “young professional” and more “young offender,” as the only furnishing is a handsome squatter with roving eyes. Even worse, Ben Kosina, her predecessor at The Chronicle, has returned to claim his former job, leaving Shayne nothing but the obituary column and a simple choice: take it or leave it.

Her first assignment should be easy: eulogizing the accidental death of washed-up former child-star, Chucky Barnard, and filing her column. Yet when Shayne interviews the people closest to Chucky, his sister claims Chucky had everything to live for, suggesting his untimely death could only be murder.

Convinced this could be the perfect headline to put her life back on track, Shayne vows to find the truth, persuade a reticent homicide detective to investigate, and bring a killer to justice, all before Ben grabs her story and the killer makes Shayne his or her personal deadline.

Shayne Winters, a small town reporter heading for LA and a new job at the LA Chronicle, a new gorgeous apartment if the photos sent to her were anything to go by and she already had a few dates lined up thanks to her dating app, what more could she ask for........

It's not that Shayne could have asked for more, all she wanted was what she was promised especially after driving from the other side of the country to start her new life, but that just wasn't in the cards for her. Shaynes new job is not what it's meant to be, her apartment looks nothing like the pictures and her first few dates well let's just say DUDS

On the upside the obituary she is meant to be writing for her new column could be more than the suicide it's been ruled, the guy who ousted her new job is kinda hot and then there is Mike the guy who was squatting in her new apartment well he is just really annoying but also in a hot way.

Shayne is amazing, she has a never say die attitude which will come in handy writing Shayne is brave and funny and even though she is a small town girl at heart she fits LA nicely.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but... 1 July 2016

I'm a fan of Camilla Chafer's writing, so I jumped on this book. And I do like the story, but I had some problems with the book.
First, and foremost, it shows a decided lack of editing/proofreading. It made reading the story a trial. I strongly suggest this story be edited and re-released.
Second, it was pretty obvious early on who the guilty party was. Her stories don't tend to be this obvious usually.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars. Enjoyed the book, but lacked something for me. 4 July 2016

Storyline was interesting, so were the characters. So much potential. I found I didn't like the heroine as much as I wanted to, just rude, shallow and presumptuous. There is no reason the male protagonist she ended up with, should like her. The writing wasn't as snappy as her Lexi Graves series that I really enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Uuugghhhh... 7 July 2016

Okay, positive first...the cover was great and kept pulling my eye. I love Camilla Chafer, especially the Lexi Graves series. I was so excited when I found she had a new book. I bought it immediately without even checking out a sample. Unfortunately, I found Shayne to be snarky in a hurtful way and the story didn't keep my attention at all. So little of it seemed believable, and it was obvious who the criminal was very early on. The characters came of a bit overdone as well. There were a few touching moments, but overall I didn't enjoy it. Admittedly, this is just one personal opinion, so I will just say try the sample first.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 30 June 2016

I was so excited to start another series by Camilla Chafer. With this one being a spinoff from the Lexi Graves series, I went in reading this with high hopes. I must say that I was not disappointed in the least. Like the Lexi Graves series this series had a lot of fun, excitement, mystery and a little bit of love mixed up.
In the story Shayne Winter moves to LA with the excitement of a new job writing headlines, only to find out that her job was taken away before she even started. So then in order to stay on it this newspaper she has to take a job writing obits and entertainment. When she gets her first assignment to write the obit for a child star, she finds herself tangled up in a mystery of who done it. She has to unravel the mystery before her deadline runs out and she loses all hope of getting that front page story. Can she unravel the mystery and still have time to settle into her new life, make friends and new contacts.
If you like a story that is fun, exciting and humorous with laugh out loud moments then you will definitely need to pick this book up and read it. It will have you guessing till the end. I believe Camilla has done it again with the new series full of fun edginess and excitement.
2.0 out of 5 stars A far cry from Lexi Graves. Shayne can only hope she runs into Lexi so she can learn how to investigate! 13 September 2016

I too am a fan of Camilla Chafer and especially the Lexi Graves stories. When I see one of those books I'm immediately downloading them to my kindle app and more times than not finish the book in one day. This is my fourth day since I started reading this book and I've only read a little over 60% of the book. I'm trying hard to like the character of Shayne but I can't. It's pretty obvious who the killer is early in the book yet this hotshot reporter is clueless. I just don't find that believable. This woman is supposedly an investigative reporter and yet she's feeding the killer information about the police investigation. I can't believe that any reporter would be that clueless or stupid. I will finish the book if only to see how long it will take before the lightbulb goes off in this ding dong's head and she realizes she helping the killer. I'm not too sure I would read another in this series if there are plans to write another book. Some major improvements would have to be made to the character of Shayne before I could find her believable and not just an egotistical airhead.
