The Dead Will Tell is the sixth entry in Linda Castillo's series featuring Kate Burkholder.

Burkholder was born into the Amish community that surrounds the town of Painters Mill, but chose to leave. She's now the Police Chief of that community. Her background makes her invaluable when dealing with the Amish community. Her calm manner and determination to solve cases make her an ideal cop.

When a man is found hanging in his barn, it looks like a case of suicide. But a clue left at the scene says murder. When another death happens on the heels of the first, Kate finds the common ground between the two deaths. It's the past that connects them. Thirty five years ago, an Amish father and his four children were killed in their home and the wife and mother was never found. What has stirred this up after all that time? Has the mother returned after all these years? Who wants revenge?

Kate is an likable, engaging character. Castillo includes an ongoing personal storyline for Kate, bringing some romance to her books. Kate has now moved into with Agent John Tomasetti. Tomasetti has his own troubles - the man responsible for killing his wife and child has just been freed from prison. And he's having trouble accepting that. I'm not as enamoured of him as Kate is. And I still don't get why Kate only calls him by his last name?!

The whodunit is nicely played - not overly hard to solve, but still enjoyable. And Castillo includes a nice little twist. Procedural details aren't overly employed, instead Castillo moves things along with deductions and action. Although I must admit, the killer and their impetus is more than a little twisted. Castillo's premise and use of the Amish community and their way of life is interesting and different enough to separate it from other series. An easy read for the porch, not earth shattering, but entertaining.

Fans of Iris Johansen would enjoy this series.

Another great read from Linda Castillo. This is the sixth in the series about the ex Amish chief of police, Kate Burkholder from Painters Mill, Ohio. It's just as brilliant as the previous five.
This story takes you back to a thirtyfive year old cold case in which an Amish family were the victims of a robbery gone wrong. The father was shot dead, four of the five young children were burnt to death and the wife, who is never seen again, is, also assumed dead.
Kate remembers hearing rumours and ghost stories about the Hochstetler family as a child, but the case was never solved.
Now residents of Painters Mill are being brutally murdered and the only thing that links them is this old case. Could that mean someone knows who it was that awful night? and if that's true, why wait so long for revenge? Kate knows someone's hiding something, and she'll do whatever it takes to find out what it is.

I really love this series. It's the Amish town angle that set's them apart from all the other's. From the very first book you fall in love with the ex Amish police chief with a big secret. You get just as excited reading about what's going on in her personal life as you do the cases, her and her loyal team working on. I hope it's not to long before the seventh in the series is available. I'll be counting down the days.

The Dead Will Tell is another very good addition to Ms Castillo's Kate Burkholder series. I'm not sure if it's because I had to dip in and out of it (it's Christmas and I have a few distractions!) rather than sitting down for a long read or if it's just the novel but I didn't find it as compelling as some of the other novels. Don't get me wrong it is still a good read but Ms Castillo has set the bar high with this series.
Dale Michaels, a fifty something grandfather is found hanging in his barn. A pillar of the community with no known enemies, he is first thought to have committed suicide until they find the gunshot wounds and a clue linking him to a 35 year old crime. Then another body is found with a similar clue. In the meantime Kate's partner, John Tomasetti, is dealing with the fact that one of the murderers of his family has got off on a technicality.
The Dead Will Tell is a slightly old fashioned novel in the sense that whilst it is ostensibly a police procedural there is little emphasis on forensics and much on gathering information but that seems to suit the rural, Amish setting. Kate is a good protagonist, she's likeable and very human. Her relationship with Tomasetti keeps her slightly on edge as he's not the easiest man to deal with, something I'm sure we can all relate to and she's determined to do a good job, despite her troubles with the council or is it in spite of and keep her community safe. I would, however, say that she is a bit thick in not spotting the link between the victims sooner when it screams off the page (it wouldn't suit the plot) but this is a minor niggle.
I liked The Dead Will Tell and have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read. As usual with this series it is informative on the Amish community and their way of life and it has a twist at the end - I would never have guessed the perpetrator in a million years.

The author returns to the Amish community and her heroine Kate Burkholder who was brought up in the faith but is now the local police chief. The mystery in this book revolves around an atrocity committed upon an Amish family in the past and a series of murders in the present. It looks like revenge but is it ? And if it is who is doing it ? And who will be next to be murdered ?

The story is compelling and the author does try to show the results of the long-ago crime on the survivor and on the perpetrators of the murder. She falls short of saying that all should be forgiven but she does examine the consequences of what happened and how it continues to affect everyone involved. The resolution of the mystery will need a small suspension of disbelief as it is slightly implausible but all in all it is very well done and captivating reading. I can never work out exactly where the author's sympathies lie - whether she is or is not a fan of the Amish way of life - I presume that it is her intention to show both the good and the bad of the faith and its adherents and this open mindedness adds depth to the story.

Kate herself is still in a relationship with John Tomasetti. In this book Tomasetti finds out that the man who was almost certainly responsible for the death of his wife and children has been released from prison. His desire for revenge is compared with the murder that Kate is investigating and it also begins to cause a rift to form between the couple.

This is an intelligent and compelling crime novel set in an interesting community and with lots to think about.
