I've already written elsewhere about my love for Helen Fitzgerald novels - she's great. Her books are all extremely funny (in a darkly humorous way) and have recurring themes (Scotland, relationships, misunderstandings, murder). She's definitely on my watchlist and I'll happily read anything she puts out there - I'm working my way through her back catalogue as we speak.
This one was a great read - introducing Krissie (who we later see in My Last Confession) and her best friend Sarah. There's some pretty hairy stuff in there I won't go into, but suffice to say that it doesn't end well. I really enjoyed this story despite the hairiness and the ridiculousness of some of the situations! It's very funny as well as very gripping and the contrast between the dark humour and the horror works really well. I can read any of Helen Fitzgerald's novels in a day because they're so enjoyable and easy to read.
I think there's a dearth of decent thrillers aimed at women - they're all a bit romancey or "female inspector who's just as good as the man" type, so I like this genre. Krissie's hugely fallible, screws up relationships, gets herself into sticky situations and makes poor decisions. She's a borderline (scratch that - definite) alcoholic, and you really want to shake her at times, but you can't help liking her. And that's what best friends are like! You love them for all their faults, and Helen Fitzgerald is excellent at bringing female relationships to life - warts and all. (I'll just put it out there that I've never partaken in murder, though.)
