Firstly I will say I enjoyed this book when I first read it in 2010, read it in no time and could not put it down, however: it is apparent that this was not written by Clancy and was done more so by the co-author Grant Blackwood. There is just enough difference in the prose for it to be evident. That being said it is still a good read. I really loved the tense boots on the ground action with Army Ranger Sam Driscoll; for me it was the highlight.
Dead or Alive brings characters from all over the previous books which is a nice touch. We get Jack Ryan Sr and Jr, John Clark, Ding and a few new comers in Aussie ex diggers which was a nice touch. The Campus is on the hunt for the Emir, basically an allegory for Bin Laden that 5 months after the books publication would finally be taken down. Even with the different feel Dead or Alive is a great techno-thriller and a decent book in its own right though if you are new to Clancy I DO recommend starting at the beginning with Hunt For Red October.
