Brilliant!! There is so much to like about this book. Lawrence Brown has done an amazing job in creating this very clever and unique story. I always enjoy a plot which is both entertaining and unpredictable, but most of all it was the characters that sets this book apart. Garth Miller is pushed further than any teenager could possibly imagine, and he comes up against some pretty unusual and interesting things.
Garth Miller was like any kid who didn’t have any parents and who had grown up as an orphan, he just wanted to know who they were and why he was all alone in the world. He finally found out that his mum had sacrificed herself to save him, and that his dad didn’t even come from the same planet. If that wasn’t enough to take in, he soon learnt that he was the son of a king and that great things were expected of him. Quite a daunting task for a boy that only just got by in school and lived in a group home with other kids just like him. Except he wasn’t like the other kids, as he had Atta Ra after him. A being from another planet that wanted his mind and what he possibly knew, and what made it infinitely worse was that Atta Ra was very determined and quite powerful being. Garth was lucky that he had others that could help him, but his whole life was about to change in the most extraordinary way. The Authors writing has really brought this story alive, and it’s certainly a book that I would strongly recommend. 5/5 Star Rating.

From the first chapter you can tell this is going to be a book of a different kind. For a start, the writing is in a unique style and it took me a while to realise that it had reminiscences of Tolkein, but with a modern twist. The action is full on and engrossing. Garth (aka David) has lived a fairly mundane life in a care home, never knowing that his background is far more interesting than he could ever have beleived - so much so that he chooses not to believe. The characters in the early part of the story are well written and realistic, taking you through the life of a teen who is just a bit 'oddball'. But this is where you later realise the author has been very clever. The 'ordinary' people in Garth's life, from the priest with his own story, to the old man on the bus, are there for a reason which does not become clear until after Garth is whisked away from his planet to another one entirely. The characters he meets have little resemblance to the ones he has just been torn from. Not only do they have different physical characteristics - like the Tribes with black eyes, but they don't share the same moral codes as those on earth - a man could be left to the hand of fate if he falls, rather than being rescued - unless he is Garth that is.
Is this boy really the son of a King? He has no inclination to find out, often refusing to do what is required, or failing epically because of his lack of skills, belief... and especially self belief.
I was intrigued and transfixed as the story continued, and Garth/David's 'luck' or the Clans belief in the hand of fate won out. This rattled along like a runaway train, but you will be happy you went along for the ride. It is an epic read and an epic in that sense of the word.. don't expect to read it in an evening! This is 'an into the early hours of morn, read'.
I was pleased to see that not everything gets solved in this Volume, leaving room for a continuing of the story in another. It will certainly be on my list to read.

I was offered a free copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review. The first chapter had brilliant reality building and characterization, so I accepted. Both these wonderful aspects continued to the end of this volume, but all the same, if I’d known the horror within the pages, I’d have declined. Our world out there is full enough of horror, so I avoid it when I want entertainment.
All the same, many people enjoy reading horror, I can’t imagine why. If you do, you’ll find this story great value. Action is unremitting, and there is humor behind the nasty events befalling our protagonist, and pretty well everyone else.
The theme is the antihero: a boy who is always on the outer, failing at everything he tries, but who is pushed by circumstances into becoming the savior of a people he has no emotional connection with. It is not until the very last scene that he starts to gain the qualities a hero needs.
The plot is ingenious, the fantasy reality compelling — but too horrible for my liking. Your taste may differ from mine, in which case, check this book out.

David: Savakerrva, Volume 1 (containing Book I and Book II) has it all: action, suspense, mystery, intrigue, myth, and romance--all in a wildly inventive, operatic universe. Together the two books are truly cinematic in scope, although they are very different types of stories.
Book I introduces many of the main players and themes, and puts the protagonist, Garth, at the beginning of his Hero's Journey, where his persona is characterized more by his weaknesses than by his strengths. As he travels to a new world, and encounters life-threatening and life-changing situations, sometimes it seems as if he will never live up to his potential. But Garth's story is a tale of truth: change takes time, and in real life (or well-told fiction), people don't change at the pace of the modern reader's all-too-short attention span. This is a story that will reward the reader who sticks with it--and at the same time, a story that, occurring in a fantastically inventive, well-thought-out universe as it does, is never boring.
While Book I is dynamically varied in its pace, Book II brings the action to a fevered pitch, with a great extended chase scene worthy of Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Bullitt. The pace of Book II is breathless, relentless--yet it leaves enough room for a close understanding of Garth's character development, as he grows into and begins to embrace his role and destiny. And the conclusion of Book II is extremely well-written and satisfying (a rarity in fiction) while providing a springboard for further adventures.
Garth, together with the great villain, Atta Ra (a high-tech killer with an appreciation for his well-worn wooden rifle stock), and Eylahn, the appealing love interest who may prove to be Garth's betrayer--these are among the most memorable characters in science fiction. And there are many others in this great cast of warriors, scoundrels, role-models, and strong women. Garth must learn from all of them if he is to survive, and more importantly find himself and fulfill his destiny.
David: Savakerrva, Volume 1 is a great entry into the science fiction canon, and is wild fun and great sport for those age 9 to 90. (Not recommended for very young children as there are some scary themes, and serious actions with real consequences.) Five stars!

This book grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let go! From the creative mind of Larry Brown comes this alternate world with a wondrous cast of characters. I especially like Logaht, the "Owl-Eye" friend of Dahkaa and Garth. There are so many compelling subplots here that are revealed only when Mr. Brown is ready to disclose them. This book really lends itself to an episodic mini-series a la "Game of Thrones". If all this is contained in Volume I, one can hardly fathom what will come from the imagination of Larry Brown in Volume II. A great read!

Savakerrva is one of the best sci-fi novels I have ever read. The book grew increasingly more exciting every chapter. I became fond of the characters as their personalities developed throughout the book. The protagonist is about a boy finding his purpose in life, and someone who I think everyone can relate to whether young or old. As I type this review I am eager to jump into book 2. For all adventure-loving sci-fi enthusiasts out there, Savakerrva is a must read!
