Robert Bryndza is becoming one of my favourite authors. This is his 3rd book in the Detective Erika Foster series and like his others, Girl In The Ice and Night Stalker his thrillers are addictive. This one is fantastic, an excellent plot with all the twists you would expect from this talented writer. Robert Bryndza knows how to reel the reader in hook, line and sinker - block out half a day because you will need to read this in one sitting. We find Erika working in the Organised Crime team, but she'd much rather be back with the Murder Investigation Team.
The opening chapter has her team searching a water filled, disused quarry, where a notorious local drug dealer is known to have dumped a large stash of heroin. The drugs are soon found, but their search also reveals the skeletal remains of 7 year old Jessica Collins. Jessica went missing 26 years ago - simply vanished into mid air.
Unable to get the poor girl's murder off her mind, she petitions to lead the murder investigation, even though it could be a career killer. Erika is reunited with the Murder Investigation Team, including Moss and Peterson. Trying to solve a 26 year old cold case, when the initial investigation had been a nightmare, might prove to be the case that breaks Erika. Maybe it will be the cold case that she cannot solve and that will haunt her forever. This is another compelling read, with our protagonist even more abrasive than usual, but DCI Foster is like a dog with a bone, she just doesn't let go, not even when her tenacity brings her before her superiors.
I have to say, I had many suspects along the way, but I never would have guessed the outcome - it took me completely by surprise - exactly as a good novel should do!
I cannot recommend this book enough. If you like mysteries, thrillers, suspense, or police procedural, you need to read this book. You won't regret it. And if you have not read the other books in the series than that's ok because you can read this stand alone - but I guarantee you'll go back and read the others also.
