Up first is “Everything You’ve Always Wanted” by Mick Garris. This is the first story by Mick Garris that I have read. I must say that I enjoyed this story of a film Director, Jack Tarrington, a one-hit wonder who directed Taxed and is traveling to Indinapolis for HorrorThon, at which he is a guest of honor. He relishes the fact that people remember his small budget classic and over the course of the weekend, he finds that everything you’ve always wanted comes with a cost. Horrifying and hilarious, this story sticks it.
Next, is “The Land of Sunsine” by Kealan Patrick Burke which is about a man who had an affair and has been banished in to the land of darkness and wants to figure out the way back into the land of sunshine. This is a brooding and depressing tale of atmosphere and dread. I liked this one too.
Third, is “Mechanical Gratitude” by Del James. Arnold Rinaldi had his two loves, his wife Betty and his 1968 Camaro SS. When Arn died, Betty took the wheel. This was a nostalgic tale that I really enjoyed.
Fourth, is “The One and Only” by J. Kenner. This is the first story by J. Kenner that I can remember reading. This one is a story of New Orleans and its voodoo and black magic. Will Underwood left for New Orleans to forget the girl of his dreams, Jessie, who dumped him mere days before he was set to propose. His old nanny, Miss Aimee told him he would always end up in New Orleans...and she was right. This one was very vivid and dreamlike, another winner.
Finally, there is “The Playhouse” by Bentley Little. Lois had a new listing dropped in her lap and went over to see it for herself. In contrast to the perfectly manicured front year, the back yeard was a disaster. A playhouse stood in the back yard. A playhouse that would be right at home in the Twilight Zone. This was a fun story.
A perfect book end for the fifth volume of Dark Screams. This was the second best volume of Dark Screams. I hope there will be more volumes in the future.
