I read the series out of order. I began with Dark Indiscretions and then backtracked to Prequel. I really don't think you have to read the series in order but it will help in order to obtain a complete understanding of characters, their beginnings, and the whys to their behaviors. The two dominant themes I recognized were obsession and revenge.
Prequel for me was a bit slow and took a lot for me to become invested in the read. I'm glad I stuck with it though. I appreciated reading James's twisted obsession with Jennifer, the prophecy, and how it all got started was well worth 3 stars alone. The history of Kain in relation to James was interesting too. A little side note.... I found myself irritated with James a lot in this read. He wanted to be treated like an adult but more often was seen having tantrums.
Don't think because Prequel is a background of the characters in the DI series it does not have all the taboo issues Shakuita Johnson fans and the DI series have come to expect and love. It's all there. This is just the beginning. Personally, I found the history on James and the humans especially interesting. Is Prequel essential to read in order to follow the series? No. But, like I said earlier to have a better awareness of characters it's worth checking out.
As for the story, it revolves around the beginnings of James and Kain and the paranormal land they live in. It also explores the families, the interactions of it's members, battles of wit and of might, and of course love, lust, and sex.
I liked this book and would recommend this to paranormal fans and others who enjoy a good love/hate story. And I must give this book 5 stars because the writer did a damn fine job in writing. I hope she continues to grow and succeed.
This is a great paranormal mix of creatures. You have the Mystics who are the strongest and the cruelest (part vamp part shape shifter witches) , and then you have the Dylia (shape shifting wolves) which we dont see much of in this book, and the Hyjia (human -cat hybrids).
Then enter the hunters who have formed this elusive group, the Mooyers and have deemed any non human creature to be called The Tarnished. With me so far? Ok....this author did a phenomenal job of taking you back and forth in everyones perspective without jumbling it all up.
Our story starts out with two young Mystics, James and Kain, who unknowingly form a bond that will keep them together. Arghhh! I do not want to give away any of the good parts of this book because it is all so good! So this is what I have to say, if you are a paranormal lover, read this book! You will not be disappointed!
I absolutely love Kain! He can be so level headed and patient, but don't eff with him because there is a whole lot of power in that boy. The relationship between him and James is the sweetest though.
I really wanted some back story on James, and why he is the evil bastard that he is. But he ended up kinda growing on me.
Mmmmm! The scenes between Kain and James...HOT! Shakuita Johnson knows how to write some sexy m/m scenes. I love this series, and each part you get to fall in love with the characters even more. Even if they are monsters.
