Detective Sergeant Charlie Cooper, recently turned forty and about to quit homicide, has been hunting for the murderer known as the Adultery Killer for ten years. And, as the Adultery Killer last killed twelve months ago, everyone is conscious that a new victim is possible. Cooper and his new partner, Detective Constable Joey Quinn, are allocated a new murder to investigate. They quickly discover that the man murdered, Fraser Grant, is the Adultery Killer. Unfortunately, he had already captured a new victim, and Cooper and Quinn need to find where she is being held before she dies.

‘There’s a brief moment, when you hear bad news, where your subconscious makes the connection before your conscious mind.’

An additional complication: the murderer’s heart has been transplanted into Eva Mattthews, and somehow (you’ll need to read the book to find out how and why) she finds out. She’s distressed: the heart of a killer is not what she envisaged when she had the transplant, and she’s experiencing horrific nightmares.

‘She was pale, so very pale, the woman in the dream.’

Will the Adultery Killer’s final victim be found alive? Is it possible that Eva’s nightmares are related to the kidnapped woman? The husband of the missing woman is desperate: he’s heard of cellular memory, and believes that Eva may have some knowledge (via her transplanted heart) that might help.

I read this novel while recovering from surgery in a Sydney hospital. The best setting, really, to appreciate the various strands of this story. While I enjoyed the novel and ambivalent about the possibility of cellular memory, there were a couple of twists which didn’t quite work for me. Still, I’m a fan of Cooper and Quinn, and as soon as I finished this book, I started the next one.

This is the second book of the Cooper & Quinn series I've read, and if possible, was even better than the prequel. In this installment we see Cooper's new partner, Joey Quinn, working alongside him to finally solve the Adultery Murderer case. Add in the very technical premise of organ transplants and cellular memory, and you have an action packed thriller that has you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last. Highly recommended.

I was so gripped by this book! I have been interested in the idea of "cellular memory" since Dr Timothy Leary talked about it back in the 1960s, and have read many of the anecdotes over the years of those who claim to have changed food, music and other preferences after receiving a donor heart. So the author had me completely right there, no matter what else happened.

But it was a great tale, too! A murder victim's heart going into a patient before their identity is known to police, the horror of learning you are alive only by having the heart of a serial killer, etc. The Sydney setting was fun (although I have no idea why it is so delightful to recognise local street names or landmarks in a book). The convoluted connections of the characters worked, as did seeing the weighing up of the moral/ethical decisions the Senior Detective had to make. I really enjoyed this one.

A book I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters are Aussies, not as an author from a different country imagines them. The hunt for the victim and the toll on the detectives is plausible, the medical aspects are very interesting. To add to the mix, I didn't notice any typos or poor editing, an achievement on its own.

Unbelievable. This book has every possible twist in the tail that any mystery/suspense novel could have. It sucks you r mind in and then spits it out just as quickly. Well worth reading and I look forward to future books in this series.

I haven't read a mystery book like this one before and I find that I've really enjoyed it. The interaction between the two detectives is really good, I can see problems ahead for Cooper with his marriage but time and the next book will tell. The ending was a surprise I didn't see coming, a good read to the end.
