Don't buy this horrible book, or maybe I should say "book". It is a cheap, unreadable digitized version of an 1876 edition. At 11 lines of text per inch, the blurry 6 point type is too densely packed to be read comfortably without a magnifying glass. Some of the pages came out printed at a slant. BiblioLife must know what a poor product this is. If you had the book in front of you and could look at the pages you would never buy it. Of course when you see it online it looks like a normal book. In reality it is useless.

George Eliot's Final Traditional Novel, Quite Lengthy, Sophisticated, Elegant

I need to start by stating that George Eliot is my favorite author, period. The reason I need to emphasize that point is that although I love all of her traditional novels, this novel is not going to suit the taste of every reader. It is classic Victorian Literature and like fashion, is very stylistic and sadly, has gone out of style. This novel is very lengthy and there are passages that are quite elegant and sophisticated.

I read this novel on Kindle and listened on audiobook. There were numerous passages that I had to read and listen to, two and three times. There are numerous references to other historical figures, historical moments, works of art, other literature that make this, to me, the "deep end of the pool". I normally read George Eliot in complete silence and commit my full concentration.

The novel is set primarily in England in the nineteenth century. As with many such lengthy novels, there are numerous plots and subplots that link together. There are romantic entanglements. There is also a story line about the Jewish Faith, and in fact is considered by many to be a monumental story about the Jewish Faith in Victorian Literature. As is typical with Victorian Literature, and is an absolute rule in a George Eliot novel, there is no vulgarity or obscenities.

I have read and listened to this this particular novel three times over the span of many years. There are numerous audiobooks. My personal favorite narrator is Nadia May.

In the event that one wishes to start with a somewhat more accessible novel by George Eliot, I would start with her third novel, "Silas Marner". Her first and second novels, "Adam Bede" and "The Mill on The Floss" are also excellent and accessible, but are on the lengthy side. "Middlemarch" is considered by many to be her masterpiece. I love them all...

She also wrote some excellent short stories. My personal favorite short story is "Janet's Repentance", which is more novella length than a short story, but touches on, among other things, domestic violence and alcohol abuse. It is very readable, and extremely sensitive, but much longer than a modern short story.

In summary, I love this novel. It is not an easy read. If I was going to read only one novel by George Eliot and for entertainment purposes only, this would not be my pick. Thank You...
