She's tenacious, sarcastic and an ex-con.

Meet Roman Cantrell - ex-army ranger who couldn't stop fighting, he went off the grid doing Black Ops but came back to the US to start an international security firm.

He keeps popping into Nikki's life at the most inconvenient times.

And he knows too much about her past.

He also knows she's not capable of good behavior.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roller Coaster Ride of Twists, Turns, & Surprises 5 December 2015
By Joan Reeves, NY Times and USA Today Bestselling Author - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Elaine Raco Chase found her bliss, and it's the romantic suspense novel Dangerous Places. At first glance, the reader thinks this mystery is about a too-handsome, too-rich bad boy athlete and his wealthy older wife. Just as you're expecting said wife to be murdered, the story twists, and you find yourself awash in a gambling scheme ripped from the headlines. But wait...that's not quite it either.

Dangerous Places is like a roller coaster ride of twists, turns, and surprises that you least expect. Nothing is as it seems from the plot to the well-drawn engaging characters. With more surprises than a a house full of party guests yelling, "Surprise," Dangerous Places is sure to delight mystery readers, but Ms. Chase, drawing on her skill as a romance author, doesn't neglect those readers wanting a sexy romance.

Enter Roman Cantrell, an absolute charmer who will enchant every female reading this book. Best of all, Roman likes a woman who is a challenge, and that surely must be the complicated Nikki Holden's middle name.

Absolutely 5 stars for characters, plot, premise, and pacing. Make room on your "keeper shelf" for Dangerous Places!

5.0 out of 5 stars Okay, where's book 2? 8 December 2015

There are several things I look for in a book: a dynamic plot, clever, realistic dialogue, and characters that I can believe in. I’ve read several of Ms. Raco Chase’s books, and I must say this is one of her best. She nailed all of my requirements, especially character development. The most notable characters are layered with gray areas that create depth and authenticity. Nikki is all of that. She has a tragic past, but she’s no whiner. She grabs life by the horns and dares it to throw her. She had my admiration right from the beginning. It doesn’t hurt that our hero is everything a gal looks for in man. He’s understanding without pandering, an appealing combination of hard-nosed and kind. The plot zips along, introducing interesting characters in a unique setting. All in all, Dangerous Places is the perfect blend of sexy, witty dialogue, intriguing action, and characters you hope to see again. Are you listening, Ms. Raco Chase?

5.0 out of 5 stars Hopefully the first of a series about these characters. 5 December 2015

This book will capture your attention from the very beginning and never let go. You get to know the characters of Nikki and Roman as the story develops and come to admire their tenacity if not always their tactics. It revolves around the sport of jai ali, but if you don't have a clue what that is, don't worry. The author gives enough information that you may become interested in finding out more about it. There are twists and turns, some you can see coming and some that seem to come out of nowhere until you think back and realize it makes perfect sense. I have to admit that I am an avid reader but have not particularly enjoyed the mystery genre. I am, however, a fan of Elaine Raco Chase, so I decided to give this book a try. I LOVE IT. I urge any non-mystery person to give it a try. I'm looking forward to the promised book 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read! 3 January 2016

Nikki Holden is an investigative reporter on the trail of a major story. Smart, sexy, and a survivor, Nikki is in deep trying to get an interview with a superstar jai alai player by using his mistress, Marcy. But Nikki is after much more than a simple interview. Then Roman Cantrell appears on the scene. Tall, dark and handsome, Roman is a private investigator looking for Marcy, who Nikki is painstaking keeping under wraps until she gets the information she needs for her story.
From the moment Nikki and Roman meet, the game is on with one surprising twist after another. I fell in love with Nikki from the beginning. Quick-witted and intelligent, she is no meek damsel in distress. Roman is her perfect match. Immediately, you can feel the attraction between the two.
The action-filled mystery with witty dialogue makes for a wonderful read. Miss Chase has done an excellent job of building up the suspense as the mystery deepens. I found myself reading late into the night until I finished it. I highly recommend the book for any romantic suspense reader. This is the first book in the Roman Cantrell-Nikki Holden Mystery series. I am anxiously anticipating the next book in the series.
One other thing I would like to mention. At the end of the book, Miss Chase included a small piece on the story behind the story. I have always been a fan of Elaine Raco Chase’s books. So, I found this information extremely interesting. I am happy that she was able to overcome her own obstacles and introduce Nikki and Roman into my world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Places is a clear winner, a Five Star read all the way! 2 March 2016
By Beach Bum Books - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Dangerous Places is sharp and well-written, with a roller-coaster ride of a plot and two alpha characters who will capture your heart and your imagination.

Nikki Holden is everything I look for in a heroine—she’s edgy, intelligent, independent, ambitious, a bit morally flexible and carries the weight of past secrets held tight… that is, until she crosses paths with Roman Cantrell who keeps showing up like a bad penny as Nikki creates just the right opportunities for the interview of a lifetime. The chemistry between them sizzles from the get go: an investigative reporter with a bulldog mentality decked out in a killer little black dress and the PI with a no nonsense approach and take no prisoners ‘tude… what’s not to love?

Nikki’s no lightweight in her profession. What seems like a simple expose for some questionable goings-on in the sport of jai alai rapidly becomes more, and events unfold as if ripped from today’s headlines. Roman has been tasked with finding the daughter of a billionaire businesswoman but finds himself, instead, hot on the heels of Nikki who just happens to have said teen in her firm embrace. Of course, nothing is quite what it seems, and with a large cast of fabulous supporting characters (both good and bad) bringing depth and some misdirection to the mystery, you are in for one heck of a ride.

What I loved was how Ms. Chase wove Nikki and Roman’s backstories into the narrative—it was seamless and masterfully done. We discover that part of what drives Nikki is a past she’s been running from, yet when Roman intercedes she finds that having a safety net isn’t all that bad. Roman is ex-military with a brief stint as a mercenary. He’s well-connected and respected at many levels within law enforcement. He is also yin to Nikki’s yang, but trust between them doesn’t come easily and their budding collaboration takes both of them on a journey that will test them at every turn.

The suspense builds as events unfold, each hard-hitting twist and turn driving the plot to a surprising and heart-stopping conclusion. The dialog is intelligent, witty, and at times laugh-out-loud funny—it will remind you of the glory days of Hepburn and Tracey. Nikki and Roman became my instant favorite dueling characters, and I can’t wait to see where their budding partnership takes them next.

Dangerous Places is a clear winner, a Five Star read all the way!
