The planet welcomed them.

The gentle wildlife was calm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Science Fiction as it should be! Great book! 24 January 2012

From the outset, this is a well-written book with a strong storyline and good nicely-drawn characters. Even the initial workings of the author in the opening pages is strong enough to pull the reader in, which is always a good thing with a sci-fi.

* * * SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT * * *

The main story element, of settlers colonising a new world, is brilliantly used as a backdrop to the smaller plot-lines of humanity overcoming against the odds, and adapting to the unknown in order to survive and stay in their new home.

The way some of the colonists rush blindly into thinking that the indigenous life of their new home is "obviously naturally tame" smacks of the way people underestimate unfamiliar environments and when the animals migrate and the storms begin to arrive, the author is quick to reflect the famous human weakness... "let's wait and see!" which leads to the inevitable loss of life as they try to survive the ever-worsening conditions.

Eventually, when the colonists decide to head South, they are forced to take remakable risks in pusuit of a stable climate, which exposes them to new dangers, and a second encounter with the animals they previously believed to be tame.

Each of these elements of story-line are handled expertly, and the resulting truce between the humans and the echoes is one which turns the story very much in favour of the colonists, who are eventually able to present a vibrant and successful world to the envoy who comes to welcome them into the Union.

* * * END OF SPOILERS * * *

Descriptively, the whole work is carefully considered and well laid out, giving the reader the whole range of sights, sounds and smells to immerse in and coupled with the strong characters, many of whom develop throughout the story as they survive and grow into the people they need to become, makes this an excellent read.

Highly recommended to fans of sci-fi and those who enjoy a moderate fantasy adventure.

I enjoyed this book. It was easy to read and the characters where believable and easy to identify with. The action and story moved at a good pace and kept my interest. The author did a good job and I will read more of his works.

I recommend this book.
