I’m so enjoying Debra Salonen’s Betting On Love series, which is set in Las Vegas and features the four daughters of larger-than-life Romani King Parlier and his wife Yetta. True to Gypsy form, each has some special abilities to foresee future events, which adds a nice twist to their stories.
The Daddy Gamble is second in the series though it works fine as a stand-alone story. This is the story of Kate, divorced and mother of four year-old Maya. Kate has been dealt a tough hand—her ex-husband is about to be released from jail and he wants visitation rights to Maya—but Kate’s tough and she’ll do anything to protect her little girl.
Part of the protection process involves Rob, son of Kate’s business partner and a talented lawyer, though his strength is not family law. As the story opens Kate is working up the courage to fire him, though he beats her to the punch and quits before she can.
One of the things I love about Debra Salonen’s books is that her characters are real. They’re everyday people like most of us, going about their business as best they can until faced with what, at times, can seem an insurmountable problem. As they deal with their issues, they grow in inner strength, finding out new things about themselves along the way.
This story touched my heart. I wanted to hug Kate when things got tough and cheer with her when life was good. Thankfully Rob was there to support her and do all those things for me. I just loved it!
