Product Description

Are You Ready to Create a Living on Your Own Terms?

The purpose of this book is to inspire you to take your talents and know-how and turn them into a flourishing livelihood - one that makes a difference in the world while allowing you to make a decent living. I've been self-employed much of my adult life. In this book (which is part biography/memoir), for the first time I share the actions and principles that helped me design a life that's ideally suited to who I am.

I call it a "manifesto" because it is my urgent call to action. I'm tired of seeing countless people living unfulfilled lives because they think there's no other choice. If you have fallen victim to this mass hypnosis, it's time to wake up!

I describe it as "unconventional" because my philosophy goes against the grain of traditional business wisdom. As I share my personal journey to full-time, self-employed status, you'll see that I definitely took the road less traveled.

Even if you're forward thinking and embrace the modern "indie" ethic, I bet you still have a bit of lingering "safe route" residue rolling around in your brain. It is my hope that this book exposes that nasty mind virus and replaces it with a more empowering mindset.

Also, I refer to the new work-life you will build as a "DIY Career." Of course, DIY stands for "do it yourself" - the idea being that your vocation is "self-made" and your journey must always start with you. It's the brave act of designing a life that makes the most of expressing and sharing who you authentically are.

Let's clarify something ...

Of course, no career path is solely DIY. Success will require the involvement of others: your fans, your peers, and perhaps a team of support players. No doubt, you can't do it completely alone.

But you can do it on your own terms ... And the first important steps must be taken exclusively by you!

The official definition of "manifesto" is "a public declaration of principles, policies, or intentions." Consider this my public declaration of principles that have served me, and others, well in the pursuit of living an authentic, purpose-driven life. My intention is to rattle the cages, inspire you, and let you know it's okay to be unhappy with the career route most people tell you to take.

There's a better way

The activities you engage in to support yourself shouldn't be "whatever I have to do to make ends meet." Do not accept this as your lot in life!

Don't get me wrong. We all have times in our lives when we must engage in work outside of our "happy zone." Lord knows I have. Sometimes you have no choice but to do what you have to do before you can do what you want to do. And there's nothing wrong with that.

It becomes a problem when you get perpetually stuck in that "work for someone else" mode. When you stop aspiring for something better. When your dreams are held captive on a never-ending back burner that has lost its flame. When you let an unproductive and unfulfilling pattern rule your life.

That's why I wrote this book. To light a fire. To share my story. And to inspire you to create your own DIY Career that is ideally suited for YOU!

5.0 out of 5 stars DIY Career Manifesto Review 28 August 2013
By lajuanda pittman - Published on Amazon.com

I've bought a lot of things from Amazon but this is my first review of a product b/c this book spoke to me in leaps & bounds... I can honestly say this is a very practical - hands-on, much needed book that should be owned by ALL creative types such as myself. I read the entire book in one setting - it's an easy read with VALUABLE information. I identify with everything Bob says - I have a business/corporate background... so breaking away to do music can be a challenge b/c it goes completely against the grain of how things are normally done. I loved everything Bob had to say in this book... in particular that he discussed how you still have to maintain a sense of 'fun... joy...' etc. on the business side of things and not get too serious b/c it can hinder the creative process... something I had been doing - getting too serious when I should of have been less intense. A last note (and I could go on, and on : ) I really loved the fact that he talked about goals really being guesses... never heard anyone discuss it quite like this and -- IT MADE SO MUCH SENSE! I highly recommend this book & can't wait for the follow up!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says 30 August 2013

This is a quick read, about an hour or so. For those familiar with Bob's usual niche of music marketing and business, this is a more generalized treatise about creating your own career in whatever your chosen field may be. The book claims to be inspirational, and that is exactly what it delivers. What it does not do is give much in the way of concrete action steps, aside from starting with something small to get you going. A similar inspirational book about creating your own career that I preferred was Be a Free Range Human: Escape the 9-5, Create a Life You Love and Still Pay the Bills (Cantwell).

What is good about all of these books (the 4 hour work week also comes to mind) is that reading something like this periodically is what some of us need to keep re-lighting that fire to take action towards our goals. I identified with several things Bob reveals about his journey, particularly incessant daydreaming, and also identify with the trap of having too many ideas of directions I could go and spreading myself too thinly for any to be successful.

If you having been thinking about creating your own career and need a little inspiration, give this a try. This is not a title I would spend a ton of cash on however.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Give Up Who You Actually Are 30 August 2013
By Michael Mucklow - Published on Amazon.com

What advice do you typically get from family and friends about your passion? You've got to live in the "real world", keep your "day job", and your passion is "just a hobby". Bob says "...doing something to make ends meet while denying your unique skills and your soul's calling is a recipe for lifelong frustration." I can attest to the truth of this, because this is what I've done. The words in this book have spoken what my soul was needing and longing to hear.

Even while releasing 10 albums in the last eight years (I say this only to make a point), I've still maintained the "fallback" day job. And I've grown increasingly frustrated because each year that passion to just simply be a full-time musician/producer has increased. "...your dreams are held captive on a never-ending back burner that has lost its flame." - you can lose the picture of yourself living out your passion if you surrender to the frustration. Don't surrender!

"It's the brave act of designing a life that makes the most of expressing and sharing who you authentically are." So well said Bob! This can be done. Yes, you're going against conventional thinking. But why be conventional if it's not who you authentically are? After reading this book I feel so much better about who I actually am and the desire to live that out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this. Share this! 24 September 2013

Being creative isn't just about making music, performing on stage, painting a picture or writing a book. It's a way of thinking that every soul who draws breath is capable of. A career is not a prescribed path with a label, it's the sum of a winding road we all travel through our choices ... however conscious we may be of them.

Bob Baker not only TOTALLY gets this, he LIVES it, and shares his passion and insight in a most inspirational way in this easy and fun read. From Wayne Dyer to Julia Cameron, Bob is a rising star in the straight speak, find the fun, follow your heart family of cheerleaders. This isn't just for "artists", but everyone with a heartbeat.

Read it. Highlight the phrases that resonate for you. Go back and read them again, and again. And share this with everyone you care about. I am.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Easy to read & Apply! 10 September 2013

This book has been surprisingly useful. I struggle with perfectionism, and the authors writing style not only left me feeling encouraged and optimistic, the questions he asks have led me to take action I've been putting off. Seriously taking the time to answer the questions filled me with positivity & led me to set goals, some of which I've already achieved!

If you struggle with uncertainty, procrastination and/or perfectionism, this book can get you beyond all of those destructive habits, provided you take the time to ANSWER the questions the Author poses.

If you just read the book without doing the activities, you'd be filled with happiness, optimism & loads of creative energy. If you take it a step further and answer the questions, amazing things can most definitely happen.

I plan on rereading and answering every question asked annually, seriously such a worthwhile read.

First Bob baker book I've completely read, and I definitely plan on reading the rest of his catalogue!

Thank you Bob, you earned a lifelong student with this one.
