Use Blocks Wet or Dry
From illustrators and designers, to students and home users, you can expand your creative possibilities with Derwent Inktense Blocks. They can be used dry for expressive, bold drawings, or washed out with water to create a bright, yet translucent ink-like effect.
Create Long-Lasting Projects
The color is permanent when dry, allowing you to create long-lasting and vibrant works of art. Plus, when the pigments are washed out, they are designed to dry quickly, which helps minimize color bleeding. Layer or place contrasting colors next to each other without the fear of color bleeding.
Apply to Any Surface
As the pigment dries permanently, it can be used on several surfaces. It’s great on fabrics, such as silk and cotton, and is ideal for quilt making. If you prefer more traditional projects, the block glides smoothly on paper. Modify your artistic canvas to fit your next project.
Make Unique Color Blends
Mix colors to create a truly unique piece of art. Whether you are using the blocks dry or with water, you can easily mix colors together to create expressive blends. You can obtain lighter shades of a color by simply adding water.

The colors in this painting are entirely from this set with no additions. I've since ordered more colors on open stock as well as ordering the Inktense pencils for use in coloring books, plus more open stock pencils.
Be warned, once you get started with these, you may find it very hard to stop!
Edited: I just got my second set of these delivered so that I can organize all 72 colors easily for use while painting. They are as addicting as I thought they would be. You'll fall in love with painting, for sure. I've included a video too!
Recent projects and gifts painted using inktense!
One caveat: remember that they work on paper, AND fabric. That means your clothing as well. Be sure you avoid getting any on your clothing as it may stain permanently. It washes off of skin with soap and water.
These granulate *heavily*... More often than not, they streak.
Perhaps they were exposed to extremes in temperature or light.... Amazon sent them to me but they were shipped prior to that from another location. There was a package within a package and the outer plastic (on the tin) was not present, although the plastic on the blocks themselves were. I wonder if someone opened them and then left them exposed?
Either way, I'm going to attempt to return them or get the set exchanged.
Wish me luck. :-\
I requested an exchange and got one; the new set arrived very quickly but with the same issues. Interestingly, the outer tin was not sealed although the inner was - again - and the sticks were dusty. I'm not entirely sure the seller didn't break the seal and then reseal the blocks themselves.
I have a set of pencils (bought elsewhere) and they are fantastic. I'm not entirely sure this reseller hasn't allowed their inventory to be exposed to large amounts of heat & light... The Inktense are notoriously brilliant (neither set were) but they are *not* lightfast.
I also ordered the complete 72 set of Inktense pencils to add to the 36 that I had and they came from the same seller. They were ALSO cloudy. Very disappointing and I think I"m going to have to send ALL of them back and buy from Jerry's or Dick Blick or something.
