I look down at my boots and wait for the humiliation that is sure to come when someone is forced to choose me in their team as the last option. “I’ll take Rach,” says Fred. And with that decision, he changes the whole shape of my military career and everything I think about myself. During chopper flights into unsecured airfields, on the receiving end of a face-ripping, through the hijinks of field life and into the moments before setting off on patrol in Afghanistan, Rach Ranton explores the actions and behaviours of those who led her through the most volatile and unpredictable of situations. Their words and actions echoing through her life, Rach tells the stories of those leaders who lifted her up, encouraged her to be her best and helped her find the purpose in her work. Leaders who were not fearless but who did not shy from facing their fears. Who were authentically themselves, openly sharing their failures and weaknesses. Who were bold, took risks and who were forced to make critical decisions in extreme circumstances. Those who succeed on the battlefield, in the boardroom and in business. Dauntless leaders.

A Fresh Voice on Leadership
Reviewed in Australia on 19 March 2020
Rach Ranton presents a fresh voice on the theme of leadership in the corporate workplace. As opposed to so many other authors on leadership Rach has lived leadership in the most hostile of environments, serving with the Australian Army in Timor and Afghanistan. The author uses her experiences from these theaters, told in the form of funny and sad anecdotes, to present leadership strategies and lessons for those aspiring to lead in the modern workplace. Rach's voice will stand out in the leadership genre because she brings a different perspective, told in a very readable style. This is a must read for anyone that wants to get ahead at work, or for those that just want to appreciate good leadership. Must read.

An excellent no holes barred look at how experience and opportunity can shape a person

A great read that busts through a topic that has had so much rubbish written about it. She brings her real world experience along for a common sense look at leadership. A truly inspirational read and a must for all ages trying to sort the wheat from the chaff in the modern corporate era.

A thoroughly engaging read that will become an annual reread.
Rach shatters the glass ceiling with her reflection on the many leadership lessons she has gained throughout her military career. From the moment she steps up as Machine Gunner in a section patrol, Rach begins her journey toward becoming a leader, like those who influenced her, with a can do'' attitude and ethos.
