Dad has Alzheimer’s. Could he really steal forty billion dollars?

Waiting tables isn’t the fast-track to law school, but Maggie Fender put her future on hold after her kid brother Travis was arrested for hacking. When their incoherent father is accused of murder, his name captures the attention of the SEC, a private investigator, and a vicious mobster who lost millions in an infamous hedge fund scam. Dad doesn’t move in those circles. He can barely feed himself. But Travis swears Dad is sending them messages about the heist. Right. Travis also says he was framed. She can’t rely on anyone. As the lone guardian for her ailing father and ex-con brother, Maggie can only hustle or face financial ruin.
When their father goes missing, can Maggie and Travis put aside their differences to find him? Or will the mobster find him first?

All my stories intersect, so your favorite characters in one novel may reappear in a completely different series. Mine is a single story world, where storylines and people cross into other lives. Consequently, my books could be read either by series or by the order in which they were written, so I’ve included both lists:

The Masters CIA Thriller Series

The Cruise FBI Thriller Series

The Fender Hacker Thriller Series

I have read Helen Hanson before (Oceans of Fear) and found that an intricate plot and a fast paced thriller which was difficult to put down. Certainly I was not disappointed with Dark Pool and found the story very believable and almost impossible to put down at all, until it was at the last page. It held my attention throughout and I believe that this was because of Helen’s experience with that wretched Alzheimer disease and a real life example of greed and regulatory incompetence which can and does lead to the ruin of the fortunes of people who have trusted financial advisers for advice. Some not so good Russian immigrants catch the attention of the reader, but it is not until the latter part of the book that the suspicions that build as you read along are shattered and the villain is someone who is interviewed early on and seems above the strife and tumult surrounding the disappearance of some big money. Even the romantic connection with another Russian is not what seems to be portrayed, so there are twists and turns aplenty to keep the reader on the ball.

A great read which is further skill of this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fender Family Honor at Stake 17 August 2016
By You can call me Lynn - Published on

In my humble opinion this is a Amateur Sleuths meets Crime Fiction with a side of Techno-Thriller for good measure.

Travis Fender was convicted of illegally hacking into a company. Later, it is discovered the company was involved with a man accused of taking lots of money from investors in a pyramid-type scheme. After Travis is released from prison, a series of events forces the Fender family into defending their honor. Tough to do when there is a father with Alzheimer's Disease, a 15 year old 'felon', and young woman barely making ends meet while being a guardian to the men in her life instead of pursuing a law degree. Will the family be put in the slammer or will they figure out who has been sullying their name?

There is so much going on, yet Ms. Hanson, shares family drama, technology, plus the ins and outs for the search for the investors' money in a way that kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next.

Warning: This is for Mature Audiences due to Violence and Adult Situations.

The Fenders are having a hard time, a really really hard time. And as usually happens one person in the family becomes the life boat for every one else. Maggie Fender is the life boat and she is bailing as fast as she can but still losing to life's water threatening to swamp her family. Her dad has Alzheimers', her fifteen year old brother is just paroled after a felony hacking charge, and oh yeah, she just lost her job.Add in a Russian mobster, a Ponzi scheme gone all kinds of upside down, a dead man, her dad accused of killing said dead man and her little brother's continued insistence that he was framed. It's a hell of a mess.
I enjoyed this mystery/thriller very much.Occasionally it bogged down a bit in high tech details, but overall it held my interest. And there is a fair amount of humor as Maggie struggles to maintain her sanity .
I'll look for this author again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex, well-plotted thriller (great airplane read)... 23 June 2013
By Kindle Customer - Published on

This is one of those books that gets better and better, in the read, as you go along. Though off to a slow start, with somewhat clipped or fragmented prose, 'Dark Pool' is a very well-plotted, intricate techno-crime thriller that ultimately satisfies. The nice long length of the book makes it an ideal coast-to-coast airplane read. The story is exciting yet human, grounded in characters that feel real, and are well-drawn, and has anecdotal historical info about the setting that adds to the story. This isn't a slick book, so if you're looking for that kind of no-thinking required shallow page-turner--this isn't it. If you are looking for a long, interesting read, with both strong female and male characters, action, mystery, intrigue, and an unpredictable plot that engages, then this is the book for you. A caveat: I don't read these kinds of books. I really, really liked it, and found the story quite addictive (it just gets better and better) though I'm not a fan of the genre. Happy reading~*

2.0 out of 5 stars Slow and Boring 17 October 2015
By Fishergirl - Published on

I really wanted to like this book, but it was so slow and boring that, the only reason I finished it was because I paid for it. Why are Hanson's characters so morose? They remind me of Kevin Costner's movies: rare smiles but like life is a drudgery. Anyway, it had its good points, but they were just few. Sorry.
