Cubes are very much a personal thing, much like art or food. So what I like may not be what you like. Here's what I like in a cube - super fast, buttery smooth, loose, neon colors, and resistant to pops and corner twists. That pretty much describes the Weilong GTS line of cubes, of which I have about a half dozen.
Now that the GTS2 came out, I had to try it since I didn't see how a cube could be any better. Frankly, I was a little disappointed. It felt gritty, to the point that I checked to make sure it had lube, which it did. And it felt too loose. It was the first cube I needed to re-lube and tighten straight out of the box to get it the way I like. After giving it a treatment of Traxxas 10k, it feels a lot more smooth and tightening it a little made it considerably less prone to popping.
The colors are still great, but the blue is a lighter shade and the green slightly darker than the previous GTS model. They are still extremely easy to see differences in color, so visual pattern recognition should still be as easy as it can be.
Not being a super fast cuber, I have to admit that I don't feel any difference between this and the GTS it replaces aside from the intial grittiness. The refinements seem to be subtle and geared toward increased reliability. For example, the tabs on the pieces are approximately 30% thicker, which should help to prevent breaking. That wasn't a problem for me, but I did see others that had reliability issues with the original GTS. There are also some small refinements in the shapes of contact surfaces in order to prevent popping, which seem to be well thought out and executed. They've documented what changed, but in a nutshell, they're all positive improvements.
I'll very likely be picking up a few of these for close friends and family, but I'm also picking up several of the older GTS model while they're on sale. Don't ask me why I feel the need to buy quantities of these - it has become an obsession.
The we I long GTS2 continues along the same vein as the we I long GTS, with a design that preserves key highlight features while simultaneously receiving optimizations and improvements. We made new adjustments to the coefficient of friction between the Contact surfaces, and made the feel lighter and more fluid; we increased the incline on the edge pieces, creating a V-shape track, resulting in more stability compared to older products. The cube’s 55. 5mm size gives it a more compact feel, more control, and allows you to break your competition records to your heart's content! Separation between internals and contact surfaces in the we I long GTS2, any part that does not provide active support also does not contact other pieces, resulting in a light feel. Upwardly adjusted center stalk design If no limits are placed on the size of the center stalk of a cube, the cube becomes more deformable, creating several locking issues. Adjusting the center stalk upwards gives the cube more space in its internals for accommodating piece bases, increasing the cube’s overall stability! This also reduces the cube’s deformability and prevents corner twists. Corner piece concavity due to the limitations on molding, typical 3x3 corner pieces will all have extraneous inclines, causing the corner to catch on the center while turning quickly or corner cutting. The concave corner piece design of the GTS completely avoids the likelihood of this issue from occurring while simultaneously increasing corner cutting and preventing popping.
