January 1951, a 12yrs old boy Johnny was at his grandparents house, Johns mother had died and his father was in the army so John was living there, John and his grandpa helped the professor over the road dig his car out of the snow, the professor was impressed when he saw Johns archeology books John liked to read, the professor told John a ghost story about a Father Baart and the church he haunted, seeing a bully after school John hid in the haunted church, in a room he found a hollow book with a blue figurine and a piece of paper, he took the book home

John and the professor share an adventure when they find the figurine is cursed, they spent much time together,
Eddie Tompke bullies John, John was having nightmares about Father Baart, he wanted the figurine, the professor decides something must be done

There are I think eleven more books in this series, I found this book very tame and not sure if I will read any others

John Bellairs is best known as the author of sixteen gothic mystery novels for young adults comprising the Lewis Barnavelt, Anthony Monday, and Johnny Dixon series. “The Curse of the Blue Figurine” (1983) is the first novel in the Johnny Dixon series.

The series is set in the early 1950s. So far from what I’ve read of Bellairs, his characters tend to be elderly eccentrics, or ordinary children (no superkids, here). Johnny Dixon is a resourceful seventh-grader, but with a child’s fears and limitations. He goes to live with his paternal grandparents in fictional Duston Heights, Massachusetts after his mother died of cancer, and his father was called to serve as a fighter pilot in Korea. Johnny's best friend is the eccentric history professor, Roderick Childermass. His worst enemy is Eddie Tompke, the class bully, who picks on Johnny because he does so well in class.

Where this series veers away from run-of-the-mill coming-of-age stories is the author's use of the supernatural, in this case the eponymous blue figurine that Johnny finds hidden in a book in his church's basement, along with the following curse:

"Whoever removes these things from the church does so at his own peril. I abjure you by the living God not to endanger your immortal soul. Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. [signed] Remigius Baart."

Naturally, Johnny does remove the blue figurine from the church and that leads to some genuinely frightening scenes, as the curse of the long dead priest begins to take over its victim's life.

If the spell of John Bellairs' writing falls over you, check out his Lewis Barnavelt series, starting with The House With a Clock In Its Walls (Lewis Barnavelt) (1973). As far as I know, Bellairs wrote only one fantasy that was meant for adults: The Face in the Frost (1969). It's the tale of two wizards, Prospero (not the one you’re thinking of) and Roger Bacon, who must overcome a third wizard, the evil Melichus before he destroys them, and a lot of other folks as well. It's one of my all-time favorite fantasies.

This is John Bellairs’ introduction to Johnny Dixon, who, in some regards, bears an uncanny resemblance to Lewis Barnavelt. Both are unnaturally fearful, both have bullies hounding them, and both are given to accept ‘gifts’ from strangers who turn out to be dead and vengeful. When is a ‘gift’ not a gift. When the the ‘person’ giving it wants you dead. This is what’s known as a booby prize. And as with Lewis, Johnny is also secretive and slow to divulge his troubles of a supernatural nature. I am hoping that Johnny will eventually come across as character in his own right and not as a Lewis knockoff. Otherwise, a great story with plenty of excitement and an ease of reading.
