Helen Forrester really writes from the heart and her own life experiences. I could not bear to put this down as it was so true to what life was like back at that time. People just had to get on with life no matter what, but this is when neighbours who were in the same type of circumstances rallied round and helped. Human nature and kindness are wonderful attributes and it really shows up her in this story.It starts off with Martha who has had a bad fall and damaged her hip being put into a crowded old folk's home. The only person who has compassion for these patients is a nursing aide called Angie, Martha's only friend. The matron is a cold unfeeling person, she tries to make sure all patients are no trouble by not allowing them out their beds even the ones who are not bedridden. Martha is sitting thinking back to when she was young and had a family of nine children living in the courts. The story goes on to tell you about her life and how her children turned out, some good some bad. Very down to earth story. I recommend highly.

A story of how the past was. And how many immigrants was treated in the 40s with poverty looming over them. with poverty reaching out to the British people as well. a story of hardship. In fact life was not easy. with a constant struggle to make ends meet. And with the war years made life unbearable. The story was well written. And very much true to life.

Really good read which gave a great insight into life for the poorer working class families in Liverpool during the second world war and after up to the 1960. Well written and I've always greatly enjoyed Helen Forrester books. Whilst I enjoyed this book I did find the ending somewhat confusing and disappointing.

a very moving story. I am only glad there was at least,a happy ending. Having been born in 1950,I can readily appreciate a lot of the story. Having myself,lived under the inadequate society of the times. Having a younger brother with spina-biffida and watching all his woes and my mother and fathers efforts to look after him. Also with 4 other children. Their efforts were not in vain though,my brother grew that independence of spirit which saw him become a chronological,a fellow of the institute of welfare officers,chairman of the disabled drivers association. Married a cerebral palsy woman in a wheel chair,herself an Olympic gold and silver medallist,representing Britain in two games. Achieving 6 gold and 2 silver Two daughters,the eldest a teacher.How proud my brother must be,as I am of him. He is my benchmark in life,if he can,I can. I may have detracted from comment,but had to try to say that my understanding of this book is born of similar circumstance and pain,watching others try their best in adversity,I truly understand,though from a certain distance.A brilliant story,so moving,filled with love. Thank you.

I read this wonderful book a few years ago and always said it was my favourite by this author, so when I seen it on kindle format monthly deal I just had to buy and read it again tissues are needed, I loved everything about the characters lives, it pulls right into your heart strings, beautiful just beautiful.
