If you enjoy Crime/ Physiological Thrillers that will take you on a emotional roller coaster ride like no other - it's a MUST READ.
It is impossible to write anything about the storyline without spoilers, it's original and totally shocking... but imagine waking up after being drugged to find your 6 month old baby gone. What would a mother do to get her baby back? How far would she go? Could she physically, mentally take the pressure, stress heartbreak? Would she redefine her moral compass and literally do anything?
The book grabs your interest from the get-go with a young mother, Erin Vogel, experiencing the nightmare scenario of the abduction of her baby, Georgia. To add to her general torment, she finds herself under the surveillance of the machine altered voice of her daughter’s abductor- a voice commanding her to commit some unspeakable crimes. If she reneges on the deal her baby will die. This is not a premise for a story that I have read ever before. You are in for a wild, heart racing ride…

This was a great detective novel. It's not often a writer can draw me into a story so much and invoke such feelings. During the book I felt so much for poor Erin and I really wanted her to win. Goodness me, what an adrenaline rush at the end. Took me ages to get to sleep after I'd finished the book because I was so hyped up, it was almost like I was right there watching it all play out. Really enjoyed this and I've now bought Pariah to continue with such a good writer.

Overall a really good thriller which keeps you guessing to the end. It sometimes gets a bit bogged down in the running personal narratives and the Albert character is inconclusive and extremely annoying. However the structure keeps a good pace and it is hard to put down, especially at the end. I would recommend it to those who don't mind a bit of gore and a good yarn

A well written and compelling thriller, but gory at times. I found it a great read, hard to put down, it had me hooked right to the very end.

Nice twists and writing style it made me want to keep reading until 2am. But I was disappointed with the cliff hanger ending.

I was hooked in from the start, and questioning what I would do in the same situation and who the hell was the bloke in the earpiece...
Clever, clever, clever, and an easy page turning read with suspense and chills. The plot lines flow and are easy to follow, and although I felt for Erin with her situation I did not connect with her 100%, but maybe there is good reason for that.
How would you feel if your young child is taken and you have to do acts that you wouldn't carry out under any circumstances or so you think.
That is what hooked me in and kept me reading.... although part of a series I didn't realise and read this very easily as a stand alone.
The supporting characters are intertwined within the story and keep it twisting, thoroughly loved the ending!!!
I shall definitely look out for more by this author.

I'm not usually a fan of detective based novems but *THIS* was a goooooood book.
Erin - mother to six month old Georgia - wakes up late one evening after she appears to have been drugged and finds her baby has disappeared. After a few frantic moments, she discovers an ear piece with a man at the other end telling her exactly what she needs to do to get her baby back - Kill.
This was super thrilling and fast paced read and I enjoyed it thoroughly... and that ending? I didn't expect that at all, it didn't even cross my mind which makes for a fantastic twist.

A very worthy addition to the Doyle series of novels and yet bravely takes risks with its narrative, placing the central character on the outskirts of the investigation and the main story for a fair chunk of the read. But when he's there, he's really there - with all of his great banter and views on the world and those around him. The character of Callum Doyle seems to be able to successfully 'double-act' and almost 'buddy-up' with anyone he meets, be they his colleagues in the NYPD or the wonderful characters he meets from the wrong side of the law. The scenes with 'Albert' who comes in to confess to an awful crime are like verbal gold dust and I'd love to see them played out on screen by two skilled actors.
The central plot is very well handled and plays the tension perfectly, with young mother Erin discovering that her baby daughter, Georgia, has gone missing. There are genuinely horrific moments, many of which are played out in the reader's mind from the skilful writing and the twists along the way as the mother seeks to find her daughter and is forced to act to stand any chance of getting her back. Placing a central character in such continual trauma and jeopardy made me think of Stephen King's Misery in the earlier chapters but then the whole thing twists and turns with a puzzle to the plot that certainly kept Calum Doyle and this reader on our toes right through to the end.
It's a clever manipulation with this fourth book in that, whilst it still is, I guess, a Police Procedural novel in many respects, it is also a very different construction and tone to the previous books. With Cry Baby I think David Jackson has managed a very successful psychological thriller addition within his series. To write this type of story many other series authors I think would feel the need to break out of their series and go with a different cast with a standalone book.
And, if you haven't read the previous three books (where have you been?) then no real need to worry as Cry Baby presents a perfectly self contained novel to simply jump in on. Be prepared for some serious surprises with this one!

Brilliant...On The Edge of My Seat Throughout!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 May 2014Verified Purchase
This book was another brilliant read in the Detective Callum Doyle series by David Jackson!
The product description alone is enough to make this a must read especially if you have read the first Three books in this series and are aware just how good this author is.
It is impossible to write anything about the storyline without spoilers, but imagine waking up after being drugged to find your 6 month old baby gone. What would a mother do to get her baby back? How far would she go? Could she physically, mentally take the pressure, stress heartbreak?
After reading 20% of this storyline I had that sinking feeling that I really did not want this book to end. I was on the edge of my seat throughout trying to play detective myself. I thought I had worked it out but then as usual with this author he puts my head on a fast spin and I'm all over the place and realise I've totally got it wrong!
Then comes the ending and although your in shock it all fits into place and you wonder how the hell you didn't work it out!
If you enjoy Crime/ Physiological Thrillers that will take you on a emotional roller coaster ride than don't think about it just download... this is a Amazing book one that I wish I was still reading!!
Highly recommended!!

I know my review title sounds like a cliché, but the truth is there are so many superlatives I could use to describe this story and how I felt about it that it is a difficult story to review and do it justice.
The product description does an excellent job of revealing what the story is without spoiling things, so I won't add anything there (I can be a bit too enthusiastic about describing a book if I enjoy it too much). What I will say though that it is a gripping read from start to finish that I could have quite happily have read in one sitting if time permitted (it turned out to be a mistake to start reading this in my lunch break at work). There is no slow build-up - it's straight in with the action and has a fast yet comfortable pace. There is just the right amount of tension and drama in the right places. It has its dark moments as Erin carries out the instructions she is told to do, it can pull at some heartstrings as Erin remembers why she is doing it, and it even has a couple of light-hearted moments. I do love a story that brings out more than one emotion from its reader. The twist at the end was a complete surprise - I can't recall even any subtle hints as to how it would end.
A wonderful story that I thoroughly recommend to anyone who loves a good mystery. I purchased this book on the strength of the high number of positive reviews and I was not let down. I haven't read any other David Jackson books before now, but he is certainly an author I will be looking at reading more of his works in the future.
