Southern Arcana, Book One

Jackson Holt has carved out a life for himself as a private investigator in New Orleans, home of one of the largest underground supernatural populations in the United States. He and his partners have never met a case they couldn't crack...until a local bar owner asks him to do a little digging on her newest hire.

New Orleans is the fourth destination in as many months for Mackenzie Brooks, a desperate woman on the run from a deranged stalker. After all, any man who shows up on her doorstep claiming to be her destined lover has more than a few screws loose. But crazy doesn't explain why Marcus always finds her, no matter how far she runs.

When her well-meaning boss puts a PI on her case, Mackenzie comes face to face with the incredible, unbelievable truth: magic is real, and whatever spell has kept her hidden and separate from the paranormal world is rapidly deteriorating.

With time running out, she has no choice but to trust Jackson as they struggle to uncover the truth of her past--and her destiny.

I was pleasantly surprised with this shifter book. It is full of action and the characters are all well fleshed out.
MacKenzie is an orphan who wants to dance. She's trained all her life for it with a backup career as a bartender (at her parent's insistence). The latter comes in handy when she finds herself on the run from a man called Marcus who tells her that they are made to be together. She has no idea how he keeps on catching up with her and even ditches her car just in case.
She ends up in New Orleans where she falls in with a motley group of magic users - shifters, seers, empaths et al. Nickie, who owns the bar where she gets a job. Jackson, a P.I., who Nickie sics on her because she's worried for her, and who becomes more than just a friend.
The big question is - why is Marcus after her and who is she really?
You have to read the book to find out and I promise that you won't be disappointed if you're looking for an action packed romance.

Mackenzie hasn’t been able to stay anywhere for more than a few days for so long because a crazy man and his hench men are chasing her, and are somehow always one step behind. When she finally finds people that she thinks she can trust and really settle with she must run again because Marcus’s men are willing to stop at nothing to get to her, including murder. Jackson is a hot private investigator and when he meets Mackenzie he takes the case, whether she wants him to or not. This is good shifter book with plenty of action and emotions. The steamy scenes are tasteful and erotic but no overdone and the storyline flows well. There are plenty of characters with lots of possibilities for a great second book in the series.

I liked the P.I intrigue that wound through this romance of epic paranormal proportions! Jackson and Kenzie have a fight to figure out what's going on, before a bigger fight out of everything.
Well written, and well edited, makes for a hard to put down read!

Right from the first paragraph I was captured, I couldn't put it down. I loved how strong Mackenzie is. It was sweet with a little bit a sexy in. Well written definitely recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent but needs work 28 September 2013
By Danielle Book Boss - Published on Amazon.com

THERE ARE SPOILERS IN MY REVIEW SO PLEASE USE CAUTION WHILE READING THIS. This was a decent read... Was I blown away by it.... not at all. A solid three stars and desire to read the next book.

The GOOD:

The world that Moira Rogers creates is really interesting. You have shifters, magic users, magic using shifters, and persons with mental abilities (empaths, seers, etc.). The story is also based in New Orleans how can you go wrong there? I liked MacKenzie (our heroine) and Jackson (our hero). A sign that I like a book is the fact that I root for my couple. If I feel indifferent or hope that the villain wins is usually a sign that the romance isn't going too well for me. I also appreciate that as a freebie, it was free. This was actually published by Samhain (Think Shelly Laurenston) so even more of a boon that this book was free. The plot was also pretty cool.

<spoiler> McKenzie is being chased because she is one of the last cougar shifters that exist. The big daddy of cougardom wants her to mate with his son so they can herald in the next generation of in-bred cats (I mean really, if there are few left, what other result would it be?</spoiler> The plot also leads me to my next point...

The BAD:

So sad to but some of the writing... and some of the details... I guess that gets chalked up to story line? I'm not sure... Things I didn't like:

<spoiler>

1. Around the 50% mark, McKenzie gets kidnapped and proceeds to be separate from Jackson for about 25-30% of the book. I thought this was a romance...And it's funny because during that 25-30% nothing really happened. I'm thinking this was the opportunity that we were supposed to get to know the other characters that are a part of the series. I've seen this done in a cleaner way.

2. Also during this time, we received very tedious details and inner dialogue from Jackson regarding his feelings about MacKenzie being kidnapped, about the rescue plan that took up about 30% of the book but we never hear his feelings about McKenzie as a person. On the other hand, McKenzie does not spend one moment while in captivity wondering about Jackson, lamenting the fact that they weren't together, wondering where he was. McKenzie was all about herself. I mean if I were kidnapped and told it was my destiny to get knocked up by a stranger, I would be thinking about me too. But this isn't about me. McKenzie could have at least took a few moments to think about this man who while she is kidnapped is so desperately trying to reach her. </spoiler>

The UGLY:

<spoiler> The sex was whack. Nothing much more to say about it. They talked the entire time. Insert rod A into slot B. Lame Lame Lame. </spoiler>

I still want to continue this series and other books from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Volcanoes Aren't THIS Hot! 24 May 2015

When my husband recommends a book, I grab it up. It will be good. And Crux is proof. Just a side note. When he first mentioned Crux to me, there was another book called Crux by Julie Reece that was also free. I will read that one very soon. I doubt it will be as steamy as this one. How could it be?

This Crux, by the writers who combine their talents and become Moira Rogers, author, has everything! BUT if you don't like shapeshifters, great romance, complex characters with relationships to a seedier, yet more honest side, or hot steamy (wait, I used that word already), volatile (yeah, that'll do it!) erotic lovemaking, don't bother. I can't remember gratuitous cussing. Maybe I was already enthralled and didn't notice. Let that be a warning: THIS IS FOR ADULTS! even I might be too young! (LOL. 65!)

The thing is, the young woman is running for her life. No place is safe for her or those she may give her heart to. Someone is out to get her. When she learns why, it still doesn't explain WHY. So what if she has an inner cougar begging her to shapeshift. That's not a good reason to kill those who get too close.

By the way, Fifty Shades and the pain be damned. This is what turns me on. It is just as hungry, sexually, but more in the moment and involved.

AND there are witches and seers trying to help the young woman become all she can be while fighting the bad guy.

This book is free. The rest of the series is out of my reach for now, but not impossibly high. Go check it out...if you dare!

4.0 out of 5 stars Really intriguing read 12 May 2017

Was very quickly sucked into this one. The premise is different, the characters are interesting and the suspense is non-stop once it gets rolling. There were points where I was holding my breath.

There are a few story points that I think needed further explanation and the final tactic that gets used seems a bit simplistic...and you wonder why it couldn't be used by more people more frequently (which would be very bad). There 's also no explanation why using that tactic (trying to avoid spoilers here!) creates so much more power than the already very powerful person they were working with had. It just didn't flow for me. Perhaps with greater detail it would have made more sense. As it was it almost seems like a rushed ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun story but slightly rushed 26 April 2015

Urban Fantasy can often be very steamy, and this book is definitely hot. It didn’t cross into explicit, but there was a lot of very fun tension running through most of the book.

The book mostly revolves around Mackenzie, but I’m not entirely sure I like her. She undergoes a lot of change and growth in the story, but it almost felt like too much. She went from super scared in the beginning, to quite confident near the end, and it just felt a little too rushed.

I did love the supporting characters though. There was a camaraderie between them that was sheer fun to witness. The ribbing and joking and obvious love everyone had for each other was a nice change from most urban fantasy stories, where the hero is mostly by him/herself. It was refreshing and heartwarming to see so many non-sexual, positive relationships.

Overall, this was a fun paranormal story that mostly featured shifters and magic. The ending felt a bit rushed, and the big climatic end fight was seriously short, but the overall story was steamy and entertaining.
