Cross Checked may be listed as a standalone in the series, but I highly recommend you read Hat Trick first. You see, not only is it an amazing book, but you get to meet both Brayden and Kayla in there as well. When Brayden and Kayla first meet, it’s in the face of a tragedy. Brayden’s mother and sister was in a horrific car crash. His mother did not survive, and his sister was in the ICU. Kayla is the nurse who took care of Miya and sent Brayden a text to let him know how Miya was doing.
Brayden is the typical sports star, an up and comer with the New York Otters, he has his share of girls and hook ups. Kayla is your not so typical female in that she does not want marriage. She feels that it doesn’t work. I was able to connect with her on so many levels. She loves taking care of people, loves pets, and doesn’t believe in marriage are just a few things we have in common.
When Brayden and Kayla meet again months later, the sparks fly. It was great reading how they come together and you watch how Brayden changes without even thinking about it. The growth between the two is good and matches the flow of the story. I am so glad it’s not an insta-love, but it does move fast. As with all of Ms. Mazzola’s books, it ends too quickly for me. That’s because I want to know more about the characters, what happens next, things of that nature.
Ms. Mazzola has a great read on the minds of her characters, nothing seems forced, the writing is good, the characters come alive and I feel almost like I’m watching a movie rather than reading a book. Definitely, a 5 star read for me.
