Jenny Schwartz’s short story is about a young woman who believes she’s the only crocodile shifter in existence. Imagine her surprise when she discovers the man running toward her followed by a hail of bullets and shoving her into the tomb in which she’d just conducted an archaeological tour reveals he’s not only a crocodile shifter, but the king. Together they fight to keep the antagonist, a brilliant (human) scientist from discovering the secrets of the tomb and using them and the shifters’ abilities to control those secrets to power his inventions.

This had a steampunk feel to it, which surprised me as I was expecting a paranormal story, which it is, but somehow that steampunk vibe seemed to fit. I loved the ‘Indiana Jones’ vibe I felt in reading this. It had humour, romance, an element of danger, and of course the magic and mystery I love.

2.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing premise, unfulfilled promise. 5 March 2017

It was alright. I mean, things were slightly confusing because you were tossed directly into the deep end with some metaphysical and magical stuff that didn't get a lot of explanation or expansion. Then the issue of her being a virgin, well, yeah, we get it, but a vague "I'm not really frigid" statement isn't enough. I'm not saying every book like this has to have super hot sex scenes, but the one line mention after all the promise of heat was worse than a fade-to-black.

Overall this could have been pretty great but it was so short that none of the elements included were given anywhere near the justice they deserved. A fast read with all the depth of a puddle and a number of promises that may as well have been given by a goldfish for all the attention paid to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fun read. A fresh, new story premise and a well developed short story. 7 November 2016

We read a LOT of shifter romances but this one came in out of left field. The premise is new and fresh, the characters were interesting and strong. Yes, it was a "clean" story but that does not mean boring. The characters had a mission that was time sensitive and too important to let their attraction overtake them. For goodness sake, the female character was not perfect but had a strong sense of self so she was not a helpless, whiny "girly" waiting for some big, strong, macho man to rescue her butt. The male character was handsome (of course) and mature enough to focus on the mission. How cool is that combination? Please give this little short a read. I could see this story line flow into a great series. Don't let the short length fool you as it was a fully developed adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Crocodile Virgin 12 December 2016

Jenny Schwartz never disappoints. Each one of her stories, whether full length or short, has relatable characters and interesting locations. I have almost all of her books; may be missing one. A great thing about this author is, because she wants to share her stories, one can often find the Kindle versions on sale at extremely affordable prices. An avid reader herself, Schwartz writes stories she likes to read and I think that's important when considering an author's work. I want to read books by an author who lives reading, not just writing to pacify what's popular at the moment. I'm a big fan of Jenny's. I can always count on her books to deliver reading fulfillment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute and funny "shifter finding their mate" story 25 February 2017

I really liked this story about a crocodile shifter. Not being raised around other shifters, Nadia was surprised when she found Paul. This is a good story for a short read. It will make you feel good in no time.

I don't read many short stories because by their very nature they're thinly fleshed, but this one was surprisingly well developed. The author packed a lot of information in very few pages.

It felt like the back story to what might become a full length novel. The only shifter stories I've ever read were werewolf stories so the twist with a crocodile shifter was refreshing. There were some very clever but subtle hints to the croc nature that made the story even more satisfying.
