The best book about the history of Croatia I ever read

The best book about the history of Croatia I ever read, without hype and excuses, "just the facts". An incredible amount of information is a fairly short book - after all, we are talking almost 1700 years of history on 300 pages! It is an easy read, but had to read it twice just to get all the facts. If you want to read just ONE book to understand the country and the conflict it went through, I highly recommend this one.
Must read for anyone going to Croatia

Excellent history and very readable. Unfortunately I had just read A Travellers History of Croatia by Benjamin Curtis before I went to Croatia and had to force my way through it. The Tanner book identified more of the complexities of Croatian history and it clarified what I saw and heard on the two weeks I spent there.

This is a very interesting and comprehensive account of a the development of present day Croatia-thanks very much, Barb.
Best general Croatian history
9 September 2013 - Published on Amazon.com
It's a challenge to find a broad history of the Croatian nation, but fortunately Tanner's 338-page book has survived the test of time. It was first published about 1997, yet remains the best general Croatian history available, without scouring the academic presses. It covers the beleaguered Croat nation from its inception in the 8th century until its traumatic struggle for independence from a failing Yugoslav shell taken hostage by Serb expansionists. The photographs are fascinating complements to the 20th century chapters. Tanner's work is a good read, with riveting anecdotes interwoven through a complex history full of drama, disappointment and conflict.
