First off: grossly overpriced for a digital book - but then blame the greed obsessed publishers who fought the format for years and are now realising they can cash in big time...
I was impressed firstly by the author's idea of the Powder Mage. Fantasy can be dreary often, with so many re-hashing the same idea.
The author shows a level of skill more in line with widely published "professional" author's - for want of a better description, the story "flows", anyone who has struggled through any number of independent author's (you know, the ones who cannot spell... :), will understand.
Mr McClellan has both developed a good concept - and written a book that is both engaging and a joy to read. His character development is sometimes a bit light, but his scenario's are well developed and follow through - while keeping your interest peaked and reluctant to stop reading...
I await the third volume with a good deal of impatience.
