Credence Audio CD – Unabridged, 12 January 2021
From New York Times best-selling author, Penelope Douglas, comes a new stand-alone!
Three of them, one of her, and a remote cabin in the woods. Let the hot winter nights ensue....
Tiernan de Haas doesn't care about anything anymore. The only child of a film producer and his starlet wife, she's grown up with wealth and privilege but not love or guidance. Shipped off to boarding schools from an early age, it was still impossible to escape the loneliness and carve out a life of her own. The shadow of her parents' fame followed her everywhere.
And when they suddenly pass away, she knows she should be devastated. But has anything really changed? She's always been alone, hasn't she?
Jake Van der Berg, her father's stepbrother and her only living relative, assumes guardianship of Tiernan who is still two months shy of 18. Sent to live with him and his two sons, Noah and Kaleb, in the mountains of Colorado, Tiernan soon learns that these men now have a say in what she chooses to care and not care about anymore.
As the three of them take her under their wing, teach her to work and survive in the remote woods far away from the rest of the world, she slowly finds her place among them.
And as a part of them.
She also realizes that lines blur and rules become easy to break when no one else is watching.
One of them has her.
The other one wants her.
He's going to keep her.
*Credence is a full length, stand-alone romance suitable for listeners 18+.

The plot had an emotional thread the whole way through and was nothing close to simplistic. It always kept you guessing to what was going to happen next. I found myself to love the idea of living in a secluded area near the wilderness, and this book perfectly captured the essence of that. The writing was simple but held so much detail being so vivid to the point you could feel the surroundings it with all your senses. It was a mundane book with the characters going about their everyday life doing chores (cooking, hunting, feeding animals) but that was also, what brought the book some blissfulness.
The characters were very developed and I liked to read about them despite their undesirable traits and inexcusable behaviors that they may have possessed. Tiernan is someone who I could to relate to aspects of and really enjoyed her personality and the way she grew to trust and love people throughout the story. The Van Der Bergs were hard to keep up with at times but being unique from each other helped. Also you can say it’s misogynistic but I honestly have no problem of them being possessive and protective of Tiernan. The thought of ‘who is she going to pick’ was going through my head on repeat the whole time. The different types of relationships were blurry since at times I was confused to what they were to each other. It did feel rushed with the romantic relationship near the end compared to what it was like the whole rest of the book but I could help love it. I will confirm too that the person she ended up with was the one I liked and picked from the start.
Now this book is VERY taboo. The steamy scenes were the most erotic and intense I’ve ever read. There was A LOT of sex that started to fill up most of the plot that I found wasn’t necessary but the way PD was so free with her words was inspiring. She turned something that most would see as negative into something liberating and empowering. The thing with Penelope Douglas is you either love her books or you hate them and I know many people won’t be able to handle this book while others will pick out everything wrong with it but me and my guilty pleasure enjoyed it. Yes, there was violence that some might see as abuse/rape and aspects that are considered not oaky but you just need to keep an open mind because at the end of the day, it is just a book. Everyone likes to read what he or she likes to read and I’m not ashamed to say I liked reading this big time.
Overall, this book is not for the lighthearted. It’s dark, sexy, heartbreaking, romantic, suspenseful and dramatic. It follows complex characters that cause you to journey on a wild and uncomfortable ride but at the end, if you keep an open mind, you’ll love it.
I love these characters. I saw myself so much in Tiernan. I enjoyed watching her growth and experience life. Shes lost and simply wants to find her place in the world and she finds it with people she didn’t even know existed until now. I enjoyed watching her open up and let herself feel, but also receive what she’s always been craving, something that each of us crave and that love. Jake, Noah and Kaleb come with their own baggage. Jake is resentful and feels stuck in place by the events that lead him there. Noah feels trapped and like he’s alone surrounded by his family. And kaleb is living with trauma that happened to him when he was younger.
I love Noah. He’s definitely a standout character for me and I was happy he got his dream come true at the end. He’s very insightful and brings out the emotions the others are trying to run from. He gives them perspective and I just wanted to hug him so bad. You could feel his lonely soul. He tried compensating it with sleeping with the whole town but he ended up just resenting himself. I hope to see him get his HEA at some point. Maybe a novella story or something but I’m glad he got his dreams answered. Jake, he’s an enigma of his own. I understood his wanting to shut himself from the world, feeling like he wasn’t enough to love and care for someone and he was definitely living in the past so I loved seeing him shed that and lighten up on Noah. He felt like he wasn’t striving for better when I think he’s wrong. He built his home and his own business from nothing while raising two sons alone. He was a lot stronger than he gave himself credit for and I loved that he opened himself up to more. I could see the chemistry he had with miari but it didn’t feel long term for me so when I saw them at the end I was both happy and apprehensive. I like them for each other, just wasn’t sure if it was long term. Kaleb, what can I say. He had me in tears and like I wanted to strangle him but he surprised me. I love that he took the time to work on himself and didn’t trap Tiernan. It was growth they both needed and their HEA was heartwarming. I love them.
I love the plot. It was incredibly well done and I loved that added suspense underlying everything. I would have like a few more incidents to really bring it home that they were being targeted but I also liked how that aspect was executed. It wasn’t overly done and it didn’t feel like it was drowned under everything else also. The world build was amazing. It truly felt like I was on too of a mountain during winter cut off from civilisation. I loved every second.
This book was a ride and it definitely makes you think about ones own circumstances and place in the world. A lot of things hit me hard in this book and made me connect with it on a deeper level. I loved the ride, I loved the angst, the tension and the emotional roller coaster. This is a book about finding yourself, finding your place in the world and also about love. That we don’t need to find it just in the one place and to not close ourselves off from it. But also to listen to ourselves and the people we care about. Be open to it and know that, love and home is a feeling not a place.
Pen always writes gritty books where the characters face challenges and this was no exception. The FMC, Tiernan “came of age” when faced with life changing events that culminated in a family she never knew. The MCs, Jake, Noah and Kaleb were the broken family waiting for their North Star. This book is raw, confronting, beautifully written, compassionate and heartbreaking.
A solid 5 star read. Highly recommend this book and this author. There are trigger warnings so pay heed.
Did the book shock me? Yes! As I said, certain parts of the storyline was pretty controversial.
Did I love it! Yes!
Am I glad I read it? Omg Yes!
Was this book different to anything I’ve read before? Mostly, but remember different is not necessarily wrong, and in this case everything happened the way it should have.
Will this book be everyone's cup of tea? No… but if you’re looking for a book with a great storyline that pushes all the boundaries, with beautifully written characters and a top-notch storyline, then this book is definitely for you.
Someone asked me if I was team Jake, Noah or Kaleb. Oh I’m definitely on Jake’s team because I loved his character and I love my men older 😉😁

Tiernan at nearly eighteen has never known love, ignored, abandoned, forgotten and broken is all she’s ever known. Her Hollywood parents never cared, she was an accessory when needed and an annoyance when she wasn’t, never apart and deciding they could never live without each other they embark on a suicide pact. So with no one left in the world other than a step uncle and cousins she decides to escape to Chapel Peak needing its seclusion but what she finds is everything she never knew she could have. As she embarks on her new life of self discovery and happiness each man plays a part in who she is becoming but when winter falls and they are trapped on the mountain together who will she give her heart too? Jake her uncle and a father, a man who she knows will protect his family and her to the death. Noah the lighthearted but complex man trying to be heard and listened too or Kaleb the man whose intensity will leave you scared and wanting more. He’s locked up tight never speaking but always watching. How will a family love like theirs survive?
I felt everything in this book it made me smile and cry at times as all of the characters really discover a love they never knew they deserved and found a place in each other called home. If you don’t like reverse harem books then this is not for you but I really can not recommend this book more. Loved loved loved this book. If I could I’d give it more than 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Which leads me into the characters; they just had no substance. There was nothing that endeared any of them to me. I didn’t connect to them, I didn’t buy into their situation. I think it became obvious early on which guy the heroine developed feelings for. Sure there were bumps along the way but nothing you couldn’t see coming. I’m kind of left feeling deflated as I had such high hopes for this book.
Love the author and will continue to read her work but this book just didn’t excite me at all.
Tiernan has gone to live with her step Uncle and his two sons in Chapel Peak Colorado way up in the mountains. Her Mother and Father have both died in the most tragic of circumstances and she is left on her own. Although both her parents might have been present physically in her life they were really not the slightest bit interested in interacting with their daughter in any way. She was like a ghost who just existed in the background. When she goes to Chapel Peak it's a big culture shock; coming from money with many privileges Tiernan has never gone without anything except love and attention.
These characters were some of the best I have read, everything was so vivid, the scenery description of where her Uncle lives was breathtaking; at times I felt I was standing on the mountain with them, looking at the peak, experiencing the smells of the mountain and the pine trees it was that good. Of course the writing was outstanding and with the taboo element that was so beautifully written it was just perfection. Each of the characters have their own problems to deal with, past events in their lives haunting them still, but with Tiernan's arrival things start to change, it's like she is their special angel sent to heal them. It's a slow burn but so so good and then it hits you full on - WHAM, and I was lost and consumed by this magnificent story.
I can't leave this review without mentioning that this book contained some of the hottest sex I have ever read and I have read lots let me tell you. Literally ladies you will need to change your panties, go stock upon the batteries for BOB because whew, your gonna need them. It is not so much the content of the sex but how Penelope Douglas has written it. She does have a special knack of describing the heat so erotically. The first book I ever read by this author was Corrupt and I still think about the shower scene near the end of that book even now.
What can I say. Complicated characters that I fell in love with, perfect location with endless descriptive that transported me to that mountain and made me yearn to be there, a brilliant story with a taboo element - yes I was in heaven.
Do yourself a favour and go and meet the Van Der Burg men; Jake, Noah and Kaleb an let them immerse themselves a little into your head, then they will creep into your heart without you even knowing and I guarantee you will be thinking about these men and Tiernan and this unforgettable story for a long time to come.
Credence really is a heartbreakingly good book about belief in finding ones self and the ability to be more then the label that is surrounding you. The story is truly about the growth of being surrounded by love and how love can change you for the better.
Penelope truly is an amazing writer and she has a way of captivating her audience with her stories, Her character developments are always amazing and how she thinks of the back stories astounds me, she gives each character a story that reflects there character and makes there personality understandable. Jake, Noah and Kaleb where missing something and Tiernan was missing alot and they could only provide what was missing to each other, the process was muddled along the way but they definitely got there and I'm glad that my suspicion was proved correct, I didn't realise how much I needed that until the end.
I had heard this book was dark and full of taboo and if I'm honest it isn't, I can't even say it was close to any of the milder stuff I have read. Purely Perfect
If your a sensitive reader this may not be for you as this is not for everyone, it taboo, shocking very steamy and does have mentions of serious topics.
I did love Jake and Noah and I felt they had much better character development then Kaleb, which I wish he had more of. I didn’t like Kaleb’s as much as the others at first and it took me most of the book to some what enjoy his character. We don’t know who she is going to pick as her love interest throughout this hole book but I did end up really liking the ending.
It also does take a while to get insight to why Tiernan come across disconnected and abit of a shell of a person - but we do get a reason to understand the character.
It was not what I expected and very different to Penelope’s other romance books but as she stated in her acknowledgements that she doesn’t want to become forgettable and wants to be unpredictable. .
As I said before this book is not for everyone but I would recommend this as a must read. .
