Justin Warfield ran away to Italy to put the events of last summer and a certain dark-haired private eye behind him, to no avail. If anything, he can’t help but rehash what happened over and over. When he finally returns to South Carolina, the hotel he runs with his brother has suffered a series of incidents that are starting to look less accidental after a death threat is received.

Not satisfied that Moses Lee and his local police will find the culprit, Peter Warfield calls in the services of his good friend Marcus Drummond to help. Marcus is torn. He wants to help his friend, but he also knows that if Justin has moved on after their failed flirtation last summer, he will be devastated.

Tensions mount as danger seems to follow them at every turn, stalking them as they get closer to solving the mystery of who is behind the sabotage of the hotel.

4.0 out of 5 stars More excellent storytelling and steamy southern romance from C. J. Blaty 4 March 2017

Format: Kindle Edition
Impressions

I really enjoyed a return to favorite characters set in the ambiance of a southern beachside resort called the Warfield Hotel. This is C. J. Blaty’s latest installment in her Deep South series of murder mysteries. This book is replete with stories of long awaited love, consuming sensuality and steamy mysteries.

The story takes place in a southern beach style resort near in a small town. And as with most truly enjoyable stories about southern culture, the drama continues with a great reveal of dysfunctional family values punctuated by heroes and dystopic villains – like the local police chief.

What I enjoyed most about this story is that it continued its portrayals of emotions common to relationships burdened with “isms” and cultural bigotry. This newest installment brought some resolution to unresolved conflicts presented in the first of the series. Yet this writing left the reader with a burgeoning mystery lurking and waiting for resolution within the pages of the next installment.

Story/Plot/Conflict

The main character rediscovers a love he thought loss amid the turmoil of unexplained catastrophes threatening his family business – The Warfield Hotel. The beachside resort’s numerous dramas weaves tales of complicated loves and old south “isms” that recreate old memories, only with stronger sensual twists.

This newest installment finds main character Justin Warfield struggling with a newly outed life. His brave declaration of being gay has not changed the affection of his immediately circle of close friends and employees – but it seems to have embolden an unknown enemy bent on wrecking his life and destroying the family hotel.

Justin Warfield’s life finally comes crashing down around him. He and his lover discover where the hate lies in a suspenseful and dramatic ending, which can only happen in the Deep South.

Main Characterizations

Justin Warfield is the blonde handsome older brother co-owner of the family business the Warfield Hotel. An outed gay he rediscovers his love of a lifetime.

Peter Warfield is the younger brother. A happy soul that lights up his world while becoming his brother’s best friend and partner in the family business – The Warfield Hotel

Marcus Drummond is the striking dark haired lover return to take his place once again in the lives of the Warfield brothers. An Atlanta private detective he returns to serve and protect.

Police Chief Moses Lee serves as the villain you love to hate. No murder mystery is complete without the ugly and the bad. The chief serves both descriptions well. He is the apex of all that is wrong.

Critiques

Truly strong characterizations and dialogue held few distractions. I gobbled the story in one day. The flow of the book was good with only a few needful transition edits.

Skill in superb creative storytelling enhances this work by C. J. Blaty. This labor was mouthwatering and left me craving more stories. The author offered a soft but suspenseful landing to resolution of the existing cliffhanger. Yet there was the threat of another lurking in the book’s close, offering the promise of another installment. I would recommend this as a good read.

I really enjoy this author’s labors in creating a believable sensual steamy adventure at a summer getaway.
4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful group of people. Would love more. 29 January 2017

Justin has had a lot to deal with. Being outed as a gay man, being shot and pushing away someone he really cared about. This took a toll on him. When Justin has to come home to help Peter with problems at the hotel he finds more then he expected. Marcus comes to help find answers for Peter. I love that Justin and Marcus had to communicate and tell each other what they wanted. The evil baddie in this story is perfect. I'm hoping we get to see more from Robert and Damien in a future story. Would definitely read more about these amazing people. They feel very alive to me and I'd like to know what happens.
3.0 out of 5 stars Good read 27 October 2016

3-3.5 Stars

There was a lot to this story, a lot going on with all of the characters, but overall I enjoyed it. I really liked Justin and Marcus and I was definitely rooting for them despite all of the obstacles thrown at them!

Justin and Marcus are thrown back together after their ending over the summer when mysterious accidents keep happening at Justin’s hotel, The Warfield Hotel. There are too many to just be coincidences and when Justin’s brother Peter get fed up with the lack of help from the local sheriff he calls in PI Marcus to help. Even though Justin has just decided he might give dating someone new a try, the chemistry that still exists between him and Marcus is too much to ignore and so are Justin’s true feelings about Marcus. Marcus is all for it, having had feelings for Justin long before!

As the two men reconnect, things continue to go wrong all around them. This group has to face some very dangerous moments and some serious heartbreak as secrets are revealed. Not everyone is who they thought they were and someone is seriously working against them.

Again, there is a lot to this story and a lot of players. I found myself more focused on the relationship building between Marcus and Justin than the actual mystery as that seemed a bit transparent to me. But, I did like seeing the two men come together and support each other and build that relationship that they both deserve. I wanted to see them happy together. Overall, this was a good story, I liked the characters and really do look forward to maybe a Damien and Robert story!
3.0 out of 5 stars M/M romance 28 January 2017

I read the first book in this series and found it interesting. SPOILERS if you have not read book 1.

Justin had run away to escape what happened and when he comes back to SC he finds out that the hotel keeps having accident that happen. They are considered accidents until a death threat arrives and now they start to think that something is wrong. Peter decides to seek extra help and calls Marcus to help him. Marcus is torn because he wants to help him but he is upset over what happened the previous summer and doesn't want to see Justin possibly happy with someone else. The problem is that someone is trying to sabotage the hotel.

The author managed to make the characters even deeper than before. Poor Marcus and Justin have so much to work through after the previous summer and you can feel the tension along with the desire to find out what is really happening. Did they lose their chance or will they have a second chance at love? Will they be able to find out who is behind the problems before something more drastic happens? While this is a good book it looks like they are setting it up for a 3rd book which would be good. I did find it a bit predictable but it still was a good book.
4.0 out of 5 stars When Peter decides to be responsible and to actually talk to Marcus about his feelings things seem to take a turn for the better 4 November 2016

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

I read the first book in this series last year and had a bit of trouble remembering it, so it took a little bit for me to get into this book. Justin had pushed Marcus away after the first book leaving both himself and Marcus hurting. This book begins just after Justin has returned to Beaumont and there have been “accidents” happening around the hotel.

Marcus and Justin are forced together again when Justin’s brother, Peter, calls Marcus to come and help. Both plan to avoid each other, but it doesn’t work out quite as well as they thought. When Peter decides to be responsible and to actually talk to Marcus about his feelings things seem to take a turn for the better. However, no matter what happens between them there always seems to be something going wrong.

In this story we get to see both of the MCs points of view, but are also given a glimpse of the one who is causing all of the problems. Seeing how Justin and Marcus still care for each other and are willing to work through their problems was wonderful, but knowing the crazy thoughts of someone wanting to hurt them dampened it a little. They’re working out their relationship at the end of the book and it seems like the series may be continuing and if it does, I can’t wait to see these characters a bit more.

Cover art is great and catches a reader’s eye.
