I love military romances, generally I get a little picky about them because I was an army wife so when things are wildly inaccurate I go a little crazy. This was not the case here, I just really didn’t like it. When I have a DNF I normally stop before 40%, I made it to 66% in this book. I honestly just believed it would get better, that there had to be more. There wasn’t.
I’m not sure if my biggest problem was the writing style or the immaturity of the characters. In the book the characters are in their mid twenties, with was seems like successful lives. And yet they all seem to be functioning alcoholics. I’m so not even kidding here at all. They start the day with beer, move on to liquor and then throw in some grown up wine for good measure. If you removed every sentence that has some form of alcohol in it you would lose half the book. Look I don’t mind if the characters are just drunk a lot, I mean I do, but reality is that that’s the reality for some people, but you don’t need to write every single time they get up for a beer. Or ask for a beer. Or grab a shot. It got so old, it doesn’t move the story along to constant tell me they are getting a new drink, like I get it they are drinking.
If the characters are drinking, they are crying. Or drinking and crying. These people cry more than any people I’ve ever met and I’m a crier. Obviously something traumatic happened, and not there is emotional fallout but if felt like the author was trying to make you believe they were struggling with their feelings but didn’t know how to achieve that so she just made them cry.
I skipped ahead and read the ending. No words. Just no. So glad I stopped. Just no.
