What if the monster that spawned the legend lived within you?

Now, Ireland Crane, reeling from a break-up and seeking a fresh start, must rely on the newly awakened Rip Van Winkle to discover the key to channeling the darkness swirling within her. 5.0 out of 5 stars It's About Time Someone Gave Us a New Version of Such a Great Legend! 26 May 2014
By Ruthi Kight - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This author has done the unimaginable: she has created a retelling of Sleepy Hollow (and not verbatim!) that is enticing and intriguing! We all love Sleepy Hollow and have seen many perspectives over the years, but this story brings so much more to the table. The fact that the main character is a female is an added bonus. She's strong, witty, and like the rest of Mrs. Rourke's characters, she's a force to be reckoned with.

The story is original and kept me on the edge of my seat from page one. Literally, read page one and tell me you're not laughing like a hyena and wondering what will come next. I challenge you! By far, this is my favorite book by this author to date!

If you're looking for a fun filled, action packed story that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page, then you've come to the right place. And even if you don't know the story of Sleepy Hollow, you'll be able to fall in love with both the legend and this story. I'll be buying this one in paperback!! Yeah, it's that amazing! Plus, that cover is the coolest thing I've seen in a hot minute. No more cookie cutter covers of two half-naked people fornicating! LOL Sorry, had to say it.

Give this one a One-Click! You won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars I was NOT disappointed!! 25 May 2014

I read Crane by Stacey Rourke. I highly recommend this book!
This author truly has a gift for writing!! This has got to be my favorite NA Paranormal book! How do I write a review for this book without telling the secrets?? Oh, I'll try!
Irving, Rip and Ichabod are great friends! When they stumble into Sleepy Hollow, things become peculiar to say the least. As this story progresses, the modern day story of Ireland Crane moving to a new (albeit oddly reminiscent) town takes stage. Strange events happen, and some think they are linked to her family. This story takes what you believe in Sleepy Hollow tales from the past and turns them into a Legendary adventure. The witty humor really makes this story enjoyable even at nighttime. The one thing I want to tell this author is, "You had me at 'Hello!'" Well, really the first sentence. You have to read it to know!! WARNING: Grab a tissue because this book will make you laugh till your sides hurt and tears stream down your face! Buy & download this book, and enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars A fun read, except for errors... 18 September 2016

I read and mostly enjoyed “Crane.” The plot has an interesting premise, is only a tad predictable and the characters were developed nicely enough that I could care about them.

So overall, it was a fun read EXCEPT for the many mistakes in the usage of the English language that went throughout the book. They really detracted from the flow of the book and from my enjoyment of it. They made me question the competence of the proof-reader, if there actually was one.

Here are just a few examples from the Kindle book edition. (I counted around 40 of these kinds of errors.):

Page 19: … shake off the stagnate funk …
Page 25: …their heads had been lobbed off?
Page 33: He wanted to ask her how she was fairing …
Page 42: … get you looking ... passed the BS of high school.
Page 69: … hooked her arm under Rip’s pits . . . there by getting more closely acquainted …
Page 101: Right then would’ve be the ideal moment …
Page 139: … it was that blood thirsty ghoul …
Page 167: Unless you’re planning to stock pile them …
Page 182: … she proceeded Eleanora in death.
Page 188: Ichabod lulled side to side in the saddle …
Page 190: … gripped the saddle horn tight, his feet slipping from the flapping stir-ups.
Page 236: Rock scrapped across her back …
Page 238: Exposed, jutting vertebrates, …
Page 257: … she was incapable to do anything …
Page 258: … enough to send him crumbling to the ground.
Page 278: … that would free him of this yolk …
Page 287: Desired brewed in his eyes, sparking flares of bold citrine.

I also read and liked her “Gryphon” series, but all these books had similar problems as well.

Ms. Rourke, PLEASE use a better proof-reader. You have a talent for plot, characters and dialog. Don’t let these simple errors get in the way of telling a good story.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Fantastic Stars! 22 October 2016

I was in the mood for a novel that would put me in the Halloween spirit, so when I was reminded that Crane was on my kindle, I just knew that it would be the perfect fit. Halloween is my favorite holiday and I’m obsessed with the legends so I was getting all sorts of good vibes. This was my first novel from Stacey Rourke but now that I’ve finished it definitely will not be the last.

“If…you break…the curse, you become…the legend.”

Chances are, most people have heard the legend that pertains to Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman so the plot isn’t something that needs to really be discussed. However, I will say that I loved Rourke’s spin on this classic tale. She so effortlessly weaves together her vision with that of Washington Irving’s. I appreciated that she spent time going back and forth between a present day and the past. It gives those who maybe aren’t familiar with Ichabod Crane a chance to meet him, but also really brings the whole story full circle. Furthermore, I loved the modernity of the characters that Rourke chose to highlight. They were spunky, comedic, and fresh, while still maintaining the integrity of personality traits we’ve come to associate with the legendary tale.

“We all change for love. It’s just a matter of what you let it change you into.”

I feel like retellings of stories always go one of two ways; they either fall flat because the love for the original could never compare, or they open our eyes to a whole new interpretation. I was super happy to see that Rourke’s take was the latter and I’m grinning ear to ear just writing this review. From the moment we met the characters to that very last ride left me satiated and giddy. It pulled me into the Halloween spirit and definitely left me wanting to see how Stacey Rourke will make the other tales in the Legends Saga her own!

3.0 out of 5 stars Review - Crane (Legends Saga #1) 2 January 2016

I came across this book on the Amazon bestsellers list when the entire series was on sale for $.99 each. The gorgeous cover drew me in and after reading the synopsis I didn't need much convincing to one-click all of them. The concept alone just had me over the moon with excitement, and I couldn't wait to get started.

I will say it would probably help having a bit of background info into each of the stories mentioned (The Headless Horseman, The Raven, Salem Witch Trials) and some of the popular authors such as Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne and HG Wells. This series is just so rich in classic fictional history it's a dream come true!

So about Crane... I found the characters needed a bit more developing and the story itself a tad more ironing out. I had a difficult time fully submersing myself into their world, due to my inability to connect with Ireland (who's name I absolutely adore), and I tended to be confused about what was going on sometimes. I actually was debating quitting, but there was a certain pull that just wouldn't let me. And I am so happy I didn't! Just to think of what I would be missing if I'd stopped causes some serious anxiety.

I had an idea of where I thought the story was going based on how certain scenes played out, but I was still surprised and awed by Stacey's ability to pull it all together and create a truly unique story. This was my first time reading one of her books, but definitely not my last. I can't wait to check out her Gryphon Series! I definitely recommend this series if you love a twist on the classics and can think outside the box.
