Review
"Joan Johnston [creates] unforgettable subplots and characters who make every fine thread weave into a touching tapestry."--Affaire de Coeur "Like Lavyrle Spencer, Ms. Johnston writes of intense emotions and tender passions that seem so real that readers will feel each one of them." --Rave Reviews
From the Back Cover
Joan Johnston transports us to rugged present-day Texas--a place of wide-open prairies and unbridled ambitions--where two ranching families, the Blackthornes and the Creeds, are locked in a bitter century-old feud. Here, Johnston brings to life a breathtaking love story--between the Blackthornes' oldest son and the Creeds' beautiful daughter--a magnificent novel of passion, vengeance, and star-crossed love.
Trace Blackthorne was taught from the cradle to take what he wanted. And he wanted Callie Creed. Eleven years ago, the feud between their families had torn them apart. But now Trace has come home, a ruthless hard-eyed stranger, making her an offer she couldn't refuse: marry him and save her struggling family from financial ruin. But the secrets of the past return to haunt them. And Callie is once again compelled to make an impossible choice--between the family who desperately needs her and the only man she has ever loved.

Secrets and Lies
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 February 2018Verified Purchase
In the beginning there was two families who because of history hated the sight of one another, even the mention of each other's names was enough to make bile rise and leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth. An unfortunate series of events makes matters worse For Trace and Callie as they are about to declare their love when Trace's brother Owen and Callie's brother Sam are involved in an accident that leave one of then paralysed. Adding fuel to the fire that stokes the hate of one over the other Callie sacrifices her love for her family. Circumstances bring them back together and Trace finds that Callie has moved on just fine without him leaving him feeling more abandoned than ever. Callie is holding onto a secret so dark her soul is stained. If Trace knew the truth he'd hate her with a renewed passion. I couldn't make up my mind if Callie was strong stubborn or misguided. She made her choice so it's all her own fault or is it? Brilliant I loved it

Joan Johnston's wonderful series about the Blackthorne's and the Creeds, descendants of the Texas women series.
Reviewed in Canada on 16 October 2018Verified Purchase
A modern-day Texas family feud between the Blackthorne's and the Creeds. Their families tore them apart when they were young, but Trace has returned, and the love he felt for Callie, a young widow, is re-kindled. It boils over when he finds out that her oldest child is his son, born into her marriage of convenience after he'd left. Some tender and funny moments with the children and lots of drama between the families. An excellent story.

I loved the story but the typos drove me nuts. It is apparent that the author rushed to get this book out without even a cursory proofreading. She should be ashamed of herself. There was so many errors that it distracts from the story.

Bridging the "feuding" Gap?
Reviewed in the United States on 26 January 2011Verified Purchase
I picked up this book because of the positive reviews and the fact that it was on the NYT bestseller list. It is a well-written story, though I think the plot is a tad bit melodramatic. I did like the overall storyline of Trace and Callie coming from feuding families, yet managing to fall in love -- and attempt to overcome obstacles. I liked Trace's character better than Callie's. He seemed more mature and ready to forgive. I tried to put myself in Callie's place and see the family and intimate relationships through her eyes, but even then I thought she was a bit indecisive with her emotions. And, I felt the ending a bit rushed, particularly the murder scheme and the who and why of it all. It's plausible, but I would have liked to see that part developed better.
I will probably read the next book in the series to see how (and if) the family feud continues. Or, if the gap will finally be bridged as families blend?

A story of love that survives
Reviewed in the United States on 19 May 2018Verified Purchase
I loved the strong, proud characters in this Western. However, the character Callie had a little too much pride and stubbornness. I had a hard time identifying with someone fiercely in love who kept pushing away the man who loves
her. It was a few too many times to ring true. Still a good book though.
